Does anyone have experience with the new Cary DVD 8?Build looks good, but I don't know how it sounds (& plays DVDs).
I have no way to audition it so I have to purchase it blindly... oops, I mean deafly...I mean both. The price is nice at $1200 new, but how good is it.
Of course red book cd playback is of utmost importance, and movie viewing too.
Follow Ups:
Hello,Upon initial inspection, it looks like Cary took an Oppo 970H and repackaged it and raised its price 600%. It would be worth it if Cary extensively modded its analog section and installed higher-quality RCAs and a beefy power supply. But if you look at Cary's pictures of the innards of the DVD8 it doesn't look like they did much extensive interior rework compared to what RAM does on the same units. The casework is killer, though ;-)
I did some digging around and this is what I determined about the Cary DVD8:I have had Cary products in the past and am truely disapointed this time. It is similar to what Rotel did on their first dvd player. They put a cheap JVC player in their own case and marked it up. But this is high-end Cary.
The Cary case looks great but I see few difference. If they only had modded it, like some are doing, I'd be really interested. I'm sorry, but I will be suspicious of their further products. Especially their HT and digital amps.

If you only see, maybe they look equal, if you read, they are not.Specifications for Cary´s are different, and in one case it goes 6dB better.
Mediatek boards of course will look similar, some other brands in a different range of prices use Mediatek but performance is different in each case and so the price.
In any case it is all up to you, and I think Cary is not affraid of nothing as it shows in it's website an inner picture of the player interior, so...
The link to the close-up of the inside of the 970 is no longer available but here is a wider shot of the inside.http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/transports/dvd-players/oppo-dv-970hd/oppo-build-quality-set-up-remote-measurements
You could click on the photo of the 970 inside and it would enlarge to a close-up but that doesn't happen anymore.

Mike
I'm glad your loyal to Cary. I have owned a few products myself. But I'm not so sure you are correct. I am waiting for delivery of the Oppo 970HD so I will know for sure.
Specs can be misleading. I'd like to believe you are right and I will know in a while.
With Regards,
Mike
