I have been thinking of downsizing my digital. I had the OS Consonance 120, and feel that despite having some good attributes, it's highs were fizzy. that may have been an oversampling trait. I haven't heard the Linear version, and that is the one I want to try. Ihave a kick butt PSAudio Lambda/Audio Note combo. I wonder if any other AN owners have tried drifting away.
Follow Ups:
Does anyone know of any consonance dealers? I've been attempting to get in touch with Quest for Sound/NAT distribution for a week now to no avail. Doesn't make me feel very good about any support...
It was an AN Transport Three/II and an AN Dac 2.1x Signature. The Consonance CDP was also NOS. Linear? I don't know. NOS. The reference unit was a NAIM CD555. The NAIM was unquestionably the most balanced, most detailed, tightest, most extended. The AN was NOT as well balanced, the trebble was not as extended or as detailed or as sweet, and the bass was not as tight or as detailed. It may even have been a tad "flabby". The Consonance had mechanical problems, poor detail, no balance and sounded both rough and euphorically colored. By comparison, an Arcam 192-T sounded smooth as silk compared to the consonance. During this performance, the dealer's assistant was rolling his eyes as the salesman tried to pass off the Consonance's performance as break-in problems.
Thank you for your input. It is as I expected. I read a review that said the same.
This one, which seems quite fair : http://www.tnt-audio.com/sorgenti/opera_cd120_e.htmland this overly enthusiastic one : http://www.stereotimes.com/cd051506.shtml
I haven't heard the 120 Linear myself, so I can't really comment. For a 1000 dollars though, I don't see anything available in a one box player that looks as good as the 120 linear. I would be willing to give one a shot if that was my budget. As far as the Audio Note DAC sounding "unbalanced" with flabby bass, I am not experiencing anything like that over here. Quite the contrary.
But we all hear things differently, and to each his own.
I read those reviews, but also one not so flattering at all. I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. The Audio Note needs a serious transport to sound their best. I have perhaps the best. The mids and extended highs are to die for. Acoustic lows are solid and musical.I just wanted to know if anyone had heard the Consonance Linear.
