Is this a good unit? ar a tascam cdrw750?Would like input before I plunge!
Follow Ups:
Slightly OT and FWIW, last June I replaced a dead Pioneer CD recorder with the Marantz CDR-632. Although part of their "professional" line, it lacks balanced connections. It does, however, accept all CD media (not just Music CD-R/RWs). I have been pretty pleased with the results. I went with the Marantz as opposed to the Tascam because I needed the ganged L/R analog recording volume pots (in a concentric arrangement). The CDRW-750, which appears to be sourced from the same OEM, does have balanced connectors (IIRC), but has independant L/R record volume pots. One surprise was how good analog sources sound through the deck's headphone jack, with my vintage Sennheiser 424 cans. Lots of detail, pretty smooth and clean sounding. The digitized analog recordings I've made appear very faithful to the originals, and there have been no operational quirks. However, it does like some media brands more than others. Excellent results with Taiyo-Yuden CD-Rs, not one coaster, and they're dirt cheap, too.
Thank you for your input!I hope more will also respond. How else do we find what we want?
Another thing to consider about the Masterlink: the capacitors in the power supply crapped out on me after only 5 years of occasional use. My tech tells me that it is very common. Not really that big a deal, but it was a $100 repair I wasn't expecting. I don't know if this is any worse than one can expect from other price point pro audio gear, but it didn't leave me with a great impression of their build quality.
I have both the Masterlink and the Tascam DV-RA1000HD. My Masterlink has been modded by B-P-T which brought it to a whole different level. I have to say now the Masterlink is better than the PCM side of the Tascam unit. Before that, it was a toss-up.
I am using the Tascam unit now to archive my vinyl and as a 2 channel mix-down for my Pyramix DSD Mastering DAW. If you want the utmost fidelity, then go with the Tascam unit. It also has a USB connection so you can connect it to your computer.
Bruce,
Thanks for your post as I'm looking for a device to archive my vinyl. How does the Tascam compare re: vinyl transfer to the Masterlink, modded and stock versions?

For vinyl transfers I've been going to DSD. Whenever I do a mixdown for someone to PCM, I'll always going to the Masterlink because I feel it has better PCM converters. There is very minor editing available in the units, that's why I always go into an editor (Pyramix) first before I dump it into the Tascam or Masterlink to burn.
it's stock and not modded. Sorry, but I don't have any experience with the Tascam. The HBB 850 was the other big boy on the block at the time, but it's no longer produced. It's a very powerful device if you're into tweaking your sound and/or recording your own music. I'd agree, that transferring from CD to CD can be somewhat tedious, as you must move it to the HD and then burn from there. That being said, there are times where I don't want to turn my computer on, or I'm busy using it and the Alesis is there to do the trick. Also, I can put 5.3 hours of music on it and burn later.
As for transferring vinyl to CD, it works fine. There is no level adjust, so I would run my preamp into the Alesis and just adjust the volume. It sounds fine.
As to the other guy and his crappy sounding CDs, I can't say. I've made hundreds of them and even done A/B comparisons and there is no lack of bass on my recordings. This being said, it's not a 'boutique' CDP by any stretch and people like the other guy have had them modded to good effect.
Try reading Fmak's posts here, on his mods. I really don't do the 24/96 CD24 proprietary format too often as it's only 19 min. worth and I just use it to copy discs. Also, it must be played back on the Alesis soley. The ADC and DACs are decent enough and you should try and read John Atkinson's test measurements in Stereophile from a couple of years back. He kind of raved about it. Michael Fremmer uses a modded one to record the sonic signatures of phono carts @ 24/96, so he can play them back at a later date and get some recollection, meaning the resolution is there on CD24.
Anyhow, as with anything in life, it has its quirks. Still, I'm glad I kept mine after selling off some stuff last year.
Thank You very much for your time to offer a detailed 'in' and 'out' regarding your experience with your Alesis. This is what I was looking for, and I promise I will not hold you against the wall if I end up with one and my expectations are different.
All responses are helpful and appreciated!
If you're burning vinyl or cd compilations it's great. If you're burning cd to cd there are much less tedious units out there if you don't mind paying the "audio cd" fee. Redbook playback is nothing to brag about but the high res playback is involving. Try bpmmusic for pricing. They used to ship for $800 total.
If all you want to do is burn cd copies, the Masterlink is a tedious and poor way to go. If you want to record cd's of vinyl, than it is not bad. If you do use it to burn cd copies, use a digital in from a quality transport of cd player. Burning cds from the built in cd player is less than satisfactory. I used it to make some copies of a cd-r sent to me from my mastering lab for evaluation before I sent the recording to be pressed. I foolishly listened to the copies, not the original, and I rescheduled another mastering session because the results were so bad (no bass, "phasey", etc.) Only at the last minute did I listen to the original, which sounded fine. I then burned a copy on the Masterlink, this time taking the signal from the digital output of my Anthem cd1, and the copy was fine. Now if I ever need to copy a cd, I use my iBook laptop computer. Much quicker and better results, too.
Thanks! This is info I was seeking, Have large Vinyl collection I want to put on CeeDee.My computer is well equiped to make C/D copies, what I'm interested in is to put the Vinyl to C/D in a quality fasion.

I have one and like it. Mine is modified by TRL and I never heard it stock, so take that into account.
