Hello,I just received my new 3990 yesterday. Right off the bat it has a sort of clicking triplet like noise that I can hear from the listening position. It dosen't sound like motor noise at all, and continues when I stop a cd. I really wasn't expecting much, and was wondering if these units are DEAD quiet or not. The reason for this purchase in the first place was to eliminate a noisy motor on my last cheap DVD player. Using this unit as transport only (into a teflon upgraded Ack dAck), so I guess I'm trying to figure out if I have to send it back or not.
Question two is: Have you attempted to use any other type of external damping techniques like cut superballs or the like? Reason I ask is I've got a sheet of 1/4" thick 3m Heavy density foam, that weighs almost as much as the unit itself! I was thinking of placing the unit on top of that or placing the unit on Superballs. and then putting the sheet of foam on top. I have an IKEA lack rack, with the lightweight rigid approach. I also have some large metal cones sitting around so I could spike this thing, too. One worry is overdamping this thing-my last player had two hand towels and about 15 LP's on top just to attempt to quiet the motor noise, which probably overdamped it. Sooner or later, I'm going to get super frustrated with this budget crap and just get a damn CEC. Budget dosen't allow this currently, unfortunately. Thanks in Advance, Fish

Fish, sorry about not responding...I have this pinched nerve that makes left hand movements a chore...back to your questions:Quote:

You could have an issue with defining a common ground in the system. As you mentioned that you have the hi-rez option, I assume that you have the dack 2.0 which has the analog ground and digital ground separated. Take a look at Chris Own's post on this issue. The dack has an onboard jumper (JP1) to also workaround this issue.
Can you check if this clicking is coming from your speakers by unconnecting them?Quote:

Besides the rollerballs, I've tried the innertube thing without much success(???). The CEC with the dAck is an amazing combination that I've heard by bringing the DAC into the dealer's showroom...you should try it, sometime. You should also try the analog outs of the 3990 to see if the clicks dissapear...if so, it has something to do with the SPDIF.
Hi PeAK, Upon further investigation, it appears that the noise is motor related. I'm enjoying the unit so much right now, I simply don't care about the noise anymore. Nonetheless, thank you for your advice. I did put the unit on the pad of heavy density foam, and placed a smallish softcover book over the transport side of the unit. Sounds really good. If I listened to more classical than I do, I would be really irritated with the motor noise, due to how soft some sections of the pieces are. Thanks again, Fish
my particular 3990 unit is very silent. I have to be 6 inches away to notice it. The 3950 could be heard from 9 feet away...glad your having fun.
Dang it PeAK, you're making me rethink taking it back. Problem is, I purchased from Best Buy via phone/mail order, and don't know what kind of hornets nest I would be walking into. -Fish
Hello Fishcat1,What ac isolation are you using with the player? I believe the unit is sensitive to AC line noise therefore you could look at Audio Horizons premium cord. How good is the cord? Lets just say I do not need a line conditioner.
Unlikely sound by yr description Does it do this when the cd is out?
Hard to understand why it would 'click (assuming it's a mechanical noise) unless the motor is running.. Might possibly be the motor/gizmo that opens/closes the drawer?? Clearly there may be an issue, you might try poking around a bit and observing to see if it's all operating properly.. sometimes bits get loose or a unit is not as well assembled as it's brothers. Buying these almost free products is best done from a local Box store.. they invariably have a 30 day 'no questions asked' return/refund policy. Too bad yr having troubles (I went thru 3 at first) the sonic result though can be significantly 'better' sounding than units up to $2000 asking.. Kinda puts things into perspective.. don't it ? :-)
It's not as if I'm bashing this thing, just wondering what it's normal operation is like. Obviously, it is going to have QC issues, as you reinforce in your post. Thank you for the tips, Bare. I'll take the hood off and check my new Ferrari's motor. HA! -Fish
To Tosh user, I have a 3990. Sounds good. No noticeable motor noise. I placed mine on roller blocks onto a bamboo cutting board. Good music from it. J Kwinn.
