When connecting a Behringer DEQ2496 you have two basic options. One is easier and one sounds better. The easy way is to run analog into the DEQ after the pre so that you retain the source switching. The problem with this is that the output levels of the Behringer are high so in order to get a normal listening volume at the amps, The level that enters the analog to digtial converter in the front end of the DEQ is very low on the meters. This indicates that very few of the available bits of resolution are being used, yielding the poor sound that many people using these products report. The best way to use them is to have your volume control before and after the DEQ so that the ADC can get full resolution. Digital sources will sound best running digital staight in to the Behringer. For your analog, I recommend getting the equally overachieving Behringer SRC2496, which has the input level control that the DEQ lacks, to handle the analog conversion and also to upsample. Send this via digital cable to the DEQ and then to your pre for volume control. Cheap XLR to RCA adapters are very transparent. In it's optimum configuration, the advantages of digital eq far outway any possible degradation and if you like the way the DEQ programs you can install the direct out mod which brings the sonics up to the level of the best Dacs.

Thanks Sendler.
If i understand right: The signal is auto adjusted by the deq in order to get the correct output signal to the amplifiers. Therfore the signal prosessing is done with a poor/low signal to get the correct signal strength?
The SRC looks interesting. Do i connect it after the pre-amp but before the DEQ? I still wants the source switching from my pre-amp.
Thanks!

There is no auto adjust for the input to the DEQ. If you put a quieter signal in by having the pre before the Behringer, you will get a quieter signal out- using only half of the bits. This is the mistake most people make when inserting a digital eq into the signal chain. Pro amps all have level controls so they are able to match the level that they need to get full resolution. They are still controling the volume in front of the DEQ but at least getting full resolution in the ADC at max listening level. If you put the pre before the DEQ you won't be able to run your digital sources digital in and you won't need the SRC in this set up because you will have volume control from the pre in front of the DEQ.
Ok,
i misunderstood. BUT if the DEQ is before the pre, you need to switch cables when changing to different sources(cd/phono/tuner), am i right? How do you make changing source easy?
Thanks!

I always just switch cables at the SRC to switch sources but then I also use stepped attenuators at the amps for volume control so I am willing to make certain concessions to get the best sound. If you use a digital in from the cd player, you can have three digital sources (XLR, RCA, and optical) connected and one analog source connected and switch back and forth with the button on the front.
Hi,
i installed the deq for the first time and offcource i did not understand a thing about using it but i have some questions about the connections:
My cd player(Atoll cd100) have only 2 outputs: rca´s and digital coaxial plug. Is it a way to make the digital coaxial connection to fit the deq´s digital in? I plan to maybe change to another cd player and use the deq´s dac.
I tried with xlr adapters on the analog out from cd but since i did not manage to use the deq i do not know how it sounds.
Thanks
Espen
