I haven't visited this place in awhile but I remember a ton of posts a couple year ago about using the Toshiba 3950 DVD player for CD playback. Was that just a trend, or is it still popular to modify cheap DVD players for audio playback?
Follow Ups:
...time marches on and so does the generational sound of the Toshiba DVD players. The current model is the SD-3990 has been compared in it's stock form to playback systems in excess of $10,000 smackers. I find it non-fatiguing, detailed and dynamic with a somewhat fore-shorten soundstage.
Essentially because I bought a Denon DCD-1650AR with a tube DAC. The Toshiba does have a very civilised sound. Not as offensive as most other CD players I've heard. Very smooth and agreeable.
I'm still using my RAM moddified 3950. It has the superclock 3. The first thing people say when they sit down to listen is how relaxing and easy to listen to..analogue-like is often used...the music flows' rises and ebbs like good analogue. Good note envelopes. It will not give you the absolute bass weight but the bass is deep and articulate. Good timing, a nice swing....playes with good height and very good depth on the Newform ribbons and projects into the room well. Music doesn't just hang around the speakers....vocals are emotinally compelling. Flaws in the music are revealed but are not "pushed" at you. Violins, piano, drums, horns, high hats....the signature sounds are very easy to identify and follow but best of all you just forget about it all and relax and enjoy....I'm not saying it is perfect, What IS?...but it makes music sound like music and is fun to listen to. I do use good ic's...Ixos Itocia...have fun...if I had one word to descibe it I would say Coherent.
... tweaked with the Swenson mod's w/Auricaps which took it to a *much* higher level. The latest Toshiba that seems to be getting mention is the 3990, which sells for around $40 or so.
