I've got a good, but a bit older CDP. I think its a very good one -- the Cary 308-T -- and a lot of other folks seem to think so too.I'm the restless sort and like to test new things. Can anyone speak to the Rega Apollo (or Saturn) as opposed to a Cary 308-T? Should I be intrigued or do I have a superior CDP already??
My usual way of "testing" new equipment is to buy a used one on A'gon and then sell it again if I'm not impressed enough. This works well and usual only costs me $50 or less for a couple month test. In a few rare instances I've actually made a little money.
But it can be a hassle, so if someone's already been down this road I'd like to hear about their experience.
Follow Ups:
I have the Cary 308T and it would surprise me if the Rega were any better. If you've searched the archives, you know that many here consider the 308T the real sleeper in an extensive lineup of Cary CDP's. I haven't heard the Rega, but my expectation is that you would simply be making a lateral move, i.e. not better or worse, just different. Now if you really want an improvement, save your pennies and trade the 308T toward a Cary 306 SACD.
It's your restlessness and trying new things. You have high curiosity.By all means, try it. If not, you will never be satisfied. It's not equipment superiority, it's psychology here!
Have you played around with various tubes in your Cary? I love my 308-T. I've tested all kinda tubes in her and settled on Amperex 7316. Perhaps a different interconnect cable. All these things effect the tone of the unit, maybe you only seek a different sound rather than a different CDP.
You first have to ask yourself what you don't like about the Cary.If it's say 3 years old then you might want to do something about it.I owned the Apollo for 3 weeks and was very impressed with it.So impressed I upgraded to the Saturn. The Saturn is the best I ever heard but then again I havn't listened to many high end CD players. Is there something better out there,I would imagine so.I happened to be at the right place and the right time as I needed a CD player.Hope this helps
There's nothing I don't like about the Cary, but I haven't heard others to know if they are better. As I said, I'm restless and like to keep trying new things. I went through 4 or 5 high end cartridges, 4 turntables and two tonearms just "testing" to see what I liked and what I didn't like. It was very instructive. I've had 3 or 4 CDPs but only one good one -- the Cary.
I'm just wondering if the new Rega CDPs are better than the Cary 308T in any one's experience. If nobody knows, then maybe I need to give it a try to see for myself.
As I said before the Saturn is really a remarkable player. It might help to read the reviews under the review section on this site.Good luck.
I have been looking for a new CDP. I currently have a Marantz CD80 & have been looking to upgrade as I don't really like it that much.
Auditioned the Naim CD5i, Rega Saturn & Naim CD5X.
Didn't like the CD5i. The Rega was better but still didn't sound right to me. I took the CD5X home & put it into my system.
Yes the CD5X was good, more controlled than my own player, better bass & sounstage, but it missed out on the slam & air in the treble.
Rather than pay all that money for the sake of swapping players, I took it back.
I have just ordered a Sonneteer Byron As everone who has heard them
says they are really superb. After all, I own their amp & havn't heard a better one, including tube amps.
It would be worth auditioning the Rega, as a lot of people rate them highly. Don't swap just for the sake of it, unless it of course it is actually better for you.
