I am a recent and happy (for now) Apollo owner and I've noticed how much of an improvement putting ie heavy brass item over the top above the cd opener improves the sound quality--fuller smoother etc., and was wondering what other tweaks you'all recommend for cdp's. I know there is a "kit" available and may or may not be worth the expense on a $750 (used) item. Thanks for your replies!

Ric:I use an Aberdeen-modded NorthStar CD-192 transport. Placing a Ziploc quart baggie of lead shot on top of the door results in a very noticeable increase in resolution and transparency. It may be due to reduced vibration of the door or just added mass, probably the former, as the beast weighs over twenty pounds.
tianguis,I use a Cambridge Audio Azur 640C- a frontloader. In my office, the equipment is on a low wood table that is dense but also fairly close to the speakers and in front to one side. More for reasons of shelf space than anything else, I set my Peavey VMP-2 microphone preamp- it's a heavy tube unit- perhaps 12 lbs- on top of the 640C and the bass and general detail is improved. The effect was so obvious, I tried a similar experiment with a Toshiba 3690 but not with the Peavey- which would crush the flyweight Toshiba. I used several 3X3X1" squares of grantite samples and for the 3690 there was a greater proportion improvement.
Probably, these weights on the players are providing a vibration damping and in my less than ideal placement of the gear, the damping effect is improving the resolution.
Cheers,
Its all a part of Vibrations management. Isolation, loading and damping.the best results are a combination of all three to some degree.
Inside my CDP, I use damping sheets, I use Black Diamond Cones for Isolation and my Pre-amp actually provides mass loading.
Some people even use plumbers putty or blue tack inside, on caps and in various other spots, I find it dulls the sound of mine but a ball of blue tack or the like on top of your caps does help as well
