Hi everyone, I'm contemplating to move to another DAC (replacing my current Accuphase DC-91). I have three contenders, although I haven't auditioned any of them, based on opinions of other: Lavry 2002, Dodson 218 and Weiss Medea. Does any of you know the sonic differences between these SOTA DAC's? Thank you.
Follow Ups:
I've not heard the Lavry 2002, but I can comment on the differences between the Dodson DA-218 and Weiss Medea. First, a disclaimer that I'm a Dodson dealer...but the differences between the DA-218 and the Medea are pretty distinct, and it will come down to a matter of taste for you. I was able to compare these two DACs in the same system, both being driven by a Weiss Jason transport. Both are very musical and engaging DACs. The Weiss offers more detail, and is the best DAC I've heard with regards to harmonic richness, ability to convey delicate passages, and overall spacial cues. It is a little bit lean-sounding relative to other DACs I've heard in its price range. The DA-218, on the other hand, has better pace, a fuller sound with better bass extension, and has an overall "smoother" sound. I would not call the DA-218 "ultra-detailed" relative to other DACs in the price range you are asking about, but the detail is there...it does not jump out at you the way it does with the Weiss Medea.
While I have not heard the Lavry 2002, I have heard the Lavry DA10 in my system with a direct comparison to the DA-218. I won't comment on the specifics of that comparison because, given the price discrepancy, it wouldn't really be an apples-to-apples comparison. I will note, however, that the Lavry DA10 is a very dry/analytical sounding DAC, so if Lavry has a "house sound", it will be moreso these things than either the Dodson or Weiss, neither of which sound analytical to me at all.
Yes, thank you Phil. Are you also familiar with Accuphase DACs?
Chris,I've not spent enough time with any Accuphase gear to offer a credible opinion on it. Sorry...
