"I can spend up to $5,000 on a new unit."You can keep $4,000 of it in your bank account, and get the Don Allen-modified Philips changer. There is a growing legion of "cost no object" audiophiles latching onto this otherwise-mundane unit, fitted with a tube output stage.

Have you compared your Don Allen Phillips player to the AH! 4000?
The "upgraded" Tjoeb4000 has asynchronous sample-rate conversion (24/192 upsampling). That to me would kill any chances of it being comparable. The popularity of the player notwithstanding.
Can Todd Krieger give us more details about the Don Allen modifications?
He obviously rates them highly, as all his system is so tweaked. Is there any web page or link about this CD player modofication?
