Just running stock, I took a few days to warm up to lower soundstage but a few simple things seem to really open up the sound besides burn-in (just leave a CD inside the tray):
- Placing a thin large hardcover book on top
- Terminating co-axial and composite video jacks with 75 ohms
- Disconnecting the video out from S-video...yes, No Lucinda videos.
More details, hereThe output stage of the 3950 was single supplied and the sonics were heavily dependent upon the quality of the electrolytics...there are none in the signal path with the 3990. The unit is a real sleeper...
Follow Ups:
Thanks for all the great information but where in Canada would I look for 75 ohm terminators? Radio Shack is now The Source and doesn't carry them......lloyd
You can get phono plugs from the source @ 8 for $5 from the "The Source" (nee RadioShack).
Thanks for all the help, PeAK and thanks to everyone else who responed.....lloyd
"Sounds like Canada..."The "Source" might carry these sorts of items or just go to your local electronics store( Toronto : Honson/Supremetronic, Above All, Active Surplus, and BM Electronics.
In the photo below are two examples: The top one has the resistor mounted and uses moulded plastic that press fits onto the metal portion. You'll need to do some soldering.
The other one (bottom) is a screw on type made up of hard plastic.
