Which ones have the best midrange, slam and extension? Anyone heard all of these?
Follow Ups:
The Heart is long out of production AFAIK, good look finding one. I'm an AH! owner and am continually impressed. The Eastern Electric looks interesting but is a bit more money and sports a rather mediocre DAC, but alas implementation is everything. I personally would prefer the AH! with its purist Phillips DAC or the very well implemented upsampled DAC.To your actual question, that comes down to the tubes you role in my experience. I am currently listening to JJTesla, which are a bit grainy but have a lot of 'slam'. The previous Siemens 7308's were smoother, more laid back but with a clean sparkly top end. I will end up back with those after I try the EH tubes I have in the wings.
If I were starting now I would mate a Squeezebox with a tubed DAC. In fact that is where I will be soon: Squeezebox already running, CD collection being ripped to FLAC as we speak, and tube DAC tbd.
Do all CD storage ripping devices work as good as others? Keep me posted on your findings. I thought that the itunes was the best music program around? Do you think you will be able to surpass CDP in soundstage and dynamics? I have not heard any reviews that state the sound is better than CDP, only more convenient and half way decent sound quality.
Used to own the Heart (but not sure it was OSE). Relaxed and laid back... too laid back...zzzzz...
It will be challenging to get feedback from someone with experience with all three, especially the Heart although I've read it is good. The Eastern Electric always gets good feedback. My experience is with the Tjeob so I can only comment on it. I'm personally having a difficult time outperforming the Tjoeb with a DIY project that has WAY more money in parts compared to the Tjoeb. The Tjoeb (especially with the upsampler) throws a BIG soundstage, with good image placement, has great tone, is quite resolving and has a lot of drive/verve/energy in each note. This last characteristic is making it difficult for me to move on. I suspect the other two CD players are quite good, and that it would be hard to make a bad move given these options. The Tjoeb has selectable voltage out (standard 2.5v) and low/benign output impedance which makes it very easy to get good synergy with preamps (I run a passive TVC). If you do a search in the "vinyl" board you'll find a lot of vinyl addicts praising the Tjoeb at this price point. My one criticism is that it is not completely free of sibilance "sss" on some vocals...although pretty good. But all things considered, it continues to represent great value. I can recommend this CD player, and the service by upscale is outstanding if you ever need to replace something.
Thanks RIO very informative. Could you please describe sibilance I'm not sure I know what this sound is. If it is an SSS ..sound that sounds like a hissing sound? I would not like that. Are we talking a problem in the highs then?
I would say that sibilance is NOT a problem with the Tjoeb for most people (at least yours truly). Maybe some staunchly devoted to vinyl would think so. But I tried to offer a balanced assessment; no piece of equipment does everything perfectly. On some recordings of female vocal there is just a tad of sibilance (over emphasis of "s" or "ch" sound) at the start of a syllable, but it is not distracting; you really have to listen for it and be in "critical mode". The highs on the Tjoeb are actually quite good. Percussion brushwork and cymbals are well resolved and present. I might also add that I do not have any of the really expensive tubes in the 6dj8 family; only the Jan 6922, the russion 6h23 (bold and dynamic) and the Amperex Bugle Boy (dimensional and holographic). Some folks have modd'd the output caps and/or resistors, but the engineer behind the Tjoeb voiced it by ear, and again is a great value as it is built. I use a passive TVC that is transparent, and a very direct, immediate sounding tube amp with hi-eff speakers. The system is quite resolving of low level info. YMMV depending on the system, and particularly the preamp and speakers
Good luck! I haven't even hear OF all of them, let alone heard them.
