I use an Oppo Digital DV970HD connected to a Channel Islands Audio VDA-2 DAC with the Channel Islands Audio VAC-1 power supply. Tried the Benchmark DAC-1 and liked the Channel Islands combo better. No harshness or glare with the highs, very analog-like, more so than the Benchmark which sounded very good to begin with. For Christmas, I received a Musical Fidelity tube buffer which took the Channel Islands, Oppo Digital combo even to a higher level. Having a high quality DAC on board helps my Oppo have the sense of depth, decay and detail which was lacking in stock form. You may also want to try upgrading the stock power cord using an IEC connector/adaptor. Just doing this alone helped increase bass definition and detail for the Oppo.

slbenz,I'm confused by this statement
"Having a high quality DAC on board helps my Oppo have the sense of depth, decay and detail which was lacking in stock form."
Was the Oppo modified? DAC chips replaced? I thought you used it as a transport here.
Thanks,
Joe,Sorry for the confusion. My Oppo is currently used as a transport. What I was trying to say was that having a high quality DAC like the Benchmark or CIA connected to the Oppo, there was a noticable improvement in sound. When I tried inexpensive DACs like the DIYEDEN Great March, I didn't hear much improvement to the sound of the Oppo. Hope that clarifies any confusion.

Thanks slbenz,
That's what I was wondering. Have heard great things about the Channel Islands DAC as well. Just really trying to determine if the Oppo will be a decent transport...sounds like it does well. Also have been curious about the MF tube buffer. Glad to hear you got good results there also, as I may want to warm things a bit. It will be fun experimenting in the next few months.
