Anyone using an Oppo player as a transport for DAC1?? If so, which one and how's the sound? I have a DAC1 on the way and am searching for a good, affordable transport. Ability to integrate into an HT system would be a plus, as I'm having to combine 2ch and HT systems (one year old has taken over the house!!!). Thanks very much for any thoughts or other recommendations!
Follow Ups:
Been using the benchmark dac 1 with the Yamaha DVD player S550. It actually sounds real good compared with the rotel cd player used as a stransport. My digital cable is a diy silver 75 digital cable.
the dac 1 is quite sensitive to power cables being used. It also reacts well to power conditioner.
I just set up a DAC1/Oppo 970 in my system. Last night I compared it to my Arcam CD33 and had a tough time picking a winner. The soundstage was different, but instrument separation and detail were similar. Next step is to add my Squeezebox V2 and do a three-way comparison.I'm using the Arcam C31 pre and P1 monoblocks, with PMC FB1+ speakers and Moon Audio cables.
Have you guys noticed improvements with coax and power cables on the DAC1? Reviews I've read say that the DAC1 is somewhat sensitive.
I run this combo (Dac 1/Oppo 970) and think it is marvelous. Other components include brand new Martin Logan Vantage, PS Audio Trio 100 amp, McCormack MAP-1 analog multi channel preamp, and Slimdevices Squeezebox 3. I use the DAC 1 ability to switch between three digital inputs for the Oppo and the SB3. Honestly, I use the SB3 for most audio only listening these days. It's just so convenient.
I use an Oppo Digital DV970HD connected to a Channel Islands Audio VDA-2 DAC with the Channel Islands Audio VAC-1 power supply. Tried the Benchmark DAC-1 and liked the Channel Islands combo better. No harshness or glare with the highs, very analog-like, more so than the Benchmark which sounded very good to begin with. For Christmas, I received a Musical Fidelity tube buffer which took the Channel Islands, Oppo Digital combo even to a higher level. Having a high quality DAC on board helps my Oppo have the sense of depth, decay and detail which was lacking in stock form. You may also want to try upgrading the stock power cord using an IEC connector/adaptor. Just doing this alone helped increase bass definition and detail for the Oppo.
slbenz,I'm confused by this statement
"Having a high quality DAC on board helps my Oppo have the sense of depth, decay and detail which was lacking in stock form."
Was the Oppo modified? DAC chips replaced? I thought you used it as a transport here.
Thanks,
Joe,Sorry for the confusion. My Oppo is currently used as a transport. What I was trying to say was that having a high quality DAC like the Benchmark or CIA connected to the Oppo, there was a noticable improvement in sound. When I tried inexpensive DACs like the DIYEDEN Great March, I didn't hear much improvement to the sound of the Oppo. Hope that clarifies any confusion.

Thanks slbenz,
That's what I was wondering. Have heard great things about the Channel Islands DAC as well. Just really trying to determine if the Oppo will be a decent transport...sounds like it does well. Also have been curious about the MF tube buffer. Glad to hear you got good results there also, as I may want to warm things a bit. It will be fun experimenting in the next few months.
Wait until the one year old is two and takes over the stereo!
