I recently bought some Magnepan MMGs and love the sound of them. I play a lot of classical music on them and my current CD player is a Marantz CC4300 5 disc changer. While this CD player was great on my old box speakers, it is somewhat grating in the upper end on the MMGs when it comes to producing classical music, especially in the string area. I am looking to replace it with something else (in the $300 price range)and the following are the options I have narrowed my decision down to: Used Onix XCD99, used Music Hall MMF25, and a new Marantz CD5001. From what I have read, it seems any of these should tame the string issue. Any thoughts, or is there something else I should be looking at? Thanks.

How about buying a DAC instead, and use your player as a transport. This way, when you realize the best player is what you are typing on, you can give it a try.
Using a DAC and playing directly off the computer is what I want to do but I'm new to the digital stuff. Much of my music is already on hard drive. What are some of the resonably priced DACs I should consider?
I also have Maggies (Tympani series) and need reasonable quality.
Add the NAD C-541i or 542 to your list if smooth sound is what you're looking for. These are very nice players in your price range with HDCD as a bonus. I owned the Onix XCD-88 (nice build quality) but preferred the NAD.
