I have an older Adcom single disc player that skips a bit. It is worse toward the beginning of discs. It primarily is a skip that acts like it doesn't want to keep advancing and tries to repeat brief segments.I am not well versed in how a CD player operates. But I'm wondering if there may be some simple service that may help. Could the photo eye be dirty? If so, how does one clean it? Could the slide mechanism the eye runs on be sticky? Again, how would one lubricate or fix this?
I do not feel this player is worth a trip to a repair shop, but hope there might be some simple checks I could try myself.

Thank you all for your help. I carefully cleaned the lens and found some plastic safe grease for the tracks. The thing stopped skipping!
My Adcom skipped once in a while and then got steadily worse until I had to bring it in for repair. I had the laser changed . It doesn't skip but now but it is still finicky in that it won't play some discs at all . It's a great sounding cdp but too frustrating . I regulated it to my second system and bought a dependable Sony that plays everything without skipping .
If you're handy ... try lubing the rails/tracks that the laser sled rides on.In older players the grease dries out, and can cause the laser sled to stick and/or bind, which will then lead to skipping.
When the laser or spindle motor goes bad ... you usually get a "DISC ERROR" or "NO DISC " message in the display window, because the disc can't be read.
You can try cleaning the lens but there is a good chance it won't help. The lasers in CD players do age with time. I've had to replace them before but this is generally not a do-it-yourself job since it generally requires test equipment and a service manual to calibrate. The last time I replaced a laser the part was about $75.
