Hey, I'm new to Digital Audio and I'm by no means a golden ear. But I like what I like. I liked my Rope Caulked 3990 over my Swenson modded 3960.
Now with an Entech 203.3 DAC on the coaxial output of the Rope caulked 3990, I think I'm hearing more music. On my preamp I switch inputs between Toshiba RCA outs and the Entech, and I like the Entech DAC music better.
I don't see myself going to a $3K DAC but not a bad start for a $50 investment.
Follow Ups:
Adding a 75 ohm termination to unused co-axial and composite video output jacks definitely improves things. In the picture is the lest expensive moulded (soft) plastic that is pressed fit to the RCA plug with the 75 ohm resistor just visible. The bottom is a Radio Shack version of the same thing with screw on hard plastic body.
Great that you like it. Do be aware that despite the mass manufacture there was significant variance between units on the venerable 3950 and personally I found the 3960 to be simply unacceptable.
Gawd knows what possible improvement smearing a half pound of disgusting rope caulk all over yr unit could possibly do, but if it pleases you then it's served a purpose :-)
I concur...many used the predecessor 3950as budget transport but I sort of agree with your analysis of the sound of the existing DACs improving when using it as a transport ...I suspect the improvements are due to reductions in the jitter.
