Dear Sir,I have just downloaded the relevant TAS issue.
The writer mentions a somewhat "light" sound (i.e. weak bass response), a drawback that is usually found in cheaper units, without enough "body".
I would like to hear from people who have tried it in a full range high-quality system.
Thanks and regards,beppe

Dear Inmates, Has anyone try to "modify" the Oppo DV-970 HD player? I've never seen any product that costs $149.00 make the approval pages of TAS. Perhaps with a few tweaks it could sound better. jkwinn
Like everyone has said about the Oppo 970 is that it is a bit thin on bass and detail for me in my Parasound, Magnepan IIIa home theater set up. I changed out the stock power cord with an aftermarket IEC adaptor and a PS Audio power cord which remedied the bass and detail problem with the added benefit of making the video picture even clearer and brighter on my Mitsubishi DLP HDTV. A very simple modification which at least on my system was worth the changes.
In a 2004 TAS, Paul Seydor rated speaker cables made of 14 gauge Home Depot outdoor extension cable ("HD-14") right up there with a passel of $400-500 wires. Twenty dollars or less will still buy you 50 feet of this stuff.
That is indeed a very important point Sir.
I see that IT is the budget component of the Year.
Maybe this means that it is competitive with a 500 USD cd player on CD playback ?
I am sure that a real full range high quality playback system woudl expose its deficiencies in an evident way.
Unfortunately I do not have access to a real full range high quality playback system so I have to wait for someone kindly doing this for me.
By the way I already have about five cheap dvd players at home that sound nice at least.
which is a $500 machine. The Oppo has more detail, bigger soundstage and a rhythmic quality in a league above the CD67SE. The Marantz has a better lower frequency extension, but it isn't very accurate.
I have had the Oppo 970 for about a week. It was bright the first two days, and then mellowed out the third. On the fourth day, I replaced the cheap power connector with a gold-plated IEC cord. It was a simple 30-minute metal surgery job. I put a nice PS Audio power cord on, and this machine just amazes me through its digital coax output. I've been so entranced by the deep and wide soundstage, detail and natural sounding timbers, voices, and effects in every music style, I haven't even bothered to listen to SACD.The bass is not light. It is punchy and warm down to about 35Hz and then rolls off. I have a subwoofer but the Oppo doesn't govern the deep bass. I had a modified Marantz CD63SE and a Pioneer DV-578A prior to the Oppo and there is no comparison. Those players had nice refined sound that was not as detailed, warm, and musical as this player. Total cost was $150 plus an $8 Furutech IEC. Best audio deal I have ever seen, and the video picture is great too.
The first few days I didn't know what all the fuss was all about. After a week's warm-up and a new power connector, I'm happy to be a believer.
Hi, I think it is a very good player. Plan to write a review in a few days. First, the company is very professional. I called 2 times and they were very nice. Great dynamic sound and worked well with tubes. Cable made a difference. I used copper and silver cables and liked the silver for my stereo. Would try in different configuration with different tubes and speakers. Luca
Thank you very much for your advice.
It is just that light bass that worries me.
I like very powerful low end.
It seems to me that the music is more "complete".
Nevertheless I am sure that some mods can improve this aspect.
But I do not anything about mods.
Kind regards,
What about those handy wipes that deoxify your equipment's connection and termination points? Or NextGen WBTs? Probably two of them.
I agree with your Sir.
There are so many cheap "accessories" that can elevate the performance of the all system in a noticeable way.
Once I even use just some Isopropyl alcohol to clean RCA plugs and receptacles to a nice effect.
Kind regards,beppe
