As of about 2 to 3 years ago most cd-r mfr's went from Japan to Taiwan , Maylasia ,India and changed the dyes used . Most of the Japanese CD-R's will still work on the old players . Look for Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui's which are still manufactured in Japan . They can be had at Rima.com , etc . Another good source of info is at cdfreaks.com . They don't delve much into audio though . By the way , I have the same trouble :~( .Hope this helps

Hi Joe. it works !!!I bought Maxell CD-Rs and the cdp reads them easily.
Can you explain me what changed on CD-Rs with dyes changed ?
Thanks a lot
Marc
So , the Maxell are made in Japan ? I live in a medium sized midwest city and can't find made in Japan CD-R's anywhere :( .As far a the dyes , I can't remember the names of the different dyes , just that they changed , plus the country of manufacture. I remember the first time I brought home Sony Suprema's that I had been using for 3 years and they wouldn't play , then noticing they were sourced from Taiwan (sourced from CMC) instead of Japan and wondering "what was I going to now ?" .
Glad it worked out
I have the cdp2000 and it reads all of my cdr's fine except for one or two of the memorex music cdr's that I have.
For the CEC to read homemade CDs you have to burn them at 4X speed or lower, probably 8X will work; try it out, it works just fine!
I had to get an older CD burner to go down to 4X and even 2X.
It is also fun to "roll" CD brands as they do sound diferent!
