Hello:I just picked up a neat old Pro CD player made by Technics. It is their model SL-P1200, a "classic" machine, but this one was made in 1990.
I noticed that the player only plays some but not all commercial discs. I was puzzled about why this was happening. Originally, I thought it had to do with the number of tracks on a disc, but I do not think that is the cause of the apparent problem.
I know that the machine will NOT play cdrs, but I do not care about that aspect right now.
Is there a gross difference between discs manufactured in the late eighties and early nineties which accounts for this?
Or, are some discs adherant to RED BOOK standards and others not, causing them to play or not play, accordingly?
Any suggestions or help is appreciated.
One final question: a portion of the back-lit upper section on the deck lights up but the area where there is a "flow-chart" does not.
Does this machine use LEDS for illumination or incandescent miniatures?
I only opened up the deck enough to peer inside and did not remove any connecting cables to explore it further, but I will.
Follow Ups:
I DJ'd with a pair of these for many years. The "flow chart" area does not light up. LOL, I still have one of these in a flight case.
Best,otari :-)
My mother-in-law, after seeing the Levinson 33H amps in my listening room: "Those are the nicest electric room heaters I've ever seen".
Thanks, otari!I saw an image on a Technics site where it certainly appeared as if that portion of the display was meant to illuminate. The other tags do work properly.
Any ideas about why it won't play other commercial CD recordings?
Thanks again!
As I understand it, it has to do with the laser servos not tracking certain discs (off center, etc) properly.I had several of these in a radio station back when they came out, and they were forever in the shop; same issues. They wouldn't track all discs, wouldn't read TOC, door wouldn't stay closed. No matter how we adjusted them (back then, you could adjust all parameters of the unit; focus, intensity, tracking, etc), we couldn't get them to function with all discs.
We finally replaced them with the 1300 series, and all of the problems went away.
Hi jdiamantis:Thanks for the information! Heck, I guess that nothing that retails for $1500 works perfectly, right?
Interesting!
I'll try to relubricate the rails and clean the lens and give it another tryout, otherwise, it is available as a nice looking 30 or so lb paperweight!
