Jon's response is accurate. ASRC stands for asynchronous sample-rate conversion. Asynchronous means that the input and output clocks run independently. Most implemenations of it are to 96 or 192 kHz, in the case of the Benchmark, it's 110 kHz.The reason why I sold the DAC1 I once had was due to sonic quirks I suspect was a byproduct of ASRC- Every time I listen to rigs that utilize ASRC, I pick up on a narrow band of HF noise that in time (15 to 30 minutes) becomes so annoying, I have to shut it down. (I suspect this sonic quirk may be caused by converting jitter to noise. See link.) And I've yet to hear such a rig that I thought was either devoid of this problem or where the noise wasn't objectionable.

First time I heard this one. I do eliminate the ASRC by removing the AD1896 completely when I add the I2S interface to the DAC-1. It becomes a NOS DAC then. Once you remove all the baggage, the AD1896 and the AKM4114 from the signal path, the jitter can be extremely low.
That's good to know. I didn't realize it was converted to non-OS. Another option I wouldn't mind seeing (and would maybe try) is a BB DF1704 digital filter, set to "slow rolloff".... ("Slow rolloff" filters has less ringing and more-resolute time response than classic filtering, but also has less HF modulation than non-OS. The 1704 uses the older "synchronous" 8x oversampling.) As far as newer chips are concerned, I think this would provide the best overall presentation.
I was considering doing this for my "Spoiler" USB TubeDAC. It uses the PCM1704. I think I may put a switch on the back to select this.The Benchmark also has a similar setting for the AD1853, but I have not tried it yet. It is also possible to put a switch on the backpanel for this.
