There is a detailed thread at Head-Fi with some very good pics of the circuit boards. The problem is the no-one with both the unit and the relevant experience has yet come along to summarize a easy set of mods to follow.cheers,

I guess you get what you pay for, but I bought a 3980 and it barely lasted 6 months. I also have a 3960 that I did the Swenson mod on that had problems almost from the start. I figured I messed it up when I did the mod, but it turns out the drawer mechanism was all gummed up. I cleaned it all up and re-lubed it and its been working fine.My original Magnavox FD1000, the true first CD player, lasted for 20 years without any issues. The main problem is it didn't sound very good. I also still have an original Sony discman that still gets used on a regular basis as my kitchen system. It has grease all over it from cooking but it still works. It also must be 20 years old. They don't make 'em like they used to.
Zacster...keen-eared Dave Pogue has brought last year's (2005) SD-3980 and had had failure issues with two different units bought in the Oct-2005 period.
Despite this, 4 months later in February 2006(see later posts in previous link/thread), he recommended the newer SD-3990 model to a friend with a very high resolution system with very good results. So far Dave has not mentioned any failure issues with this latest entry level product...so maybe they've learnt something from the previous year's model SD-3980 that you also had problems with.
