I've tried balanced and single ended and haven't heard anything between them.
Why not bipass your preamp and run direct to the amps with the Capitoles volume control?
Your best tweek for this player is the ESP 'The Essence' power cord. Unbelievable how a PC can open up the soundstage.
Also, Brian at www.essentialaudio.com sells a thing called 'The Plug' which I use - it connects on your PC then plugs into the line conditioner....also made a nice improvement.
Then try a Silent Running Audio platform - they have a custom made design for the Capitole MKII that works great.
I don't have the SE mod yet, but I'm thinking about it. I just can't bear to send the player to Canada, with all the shipping hassles and risks.
Follow Ups:
Interesting info! I have also found that power cords and footers/shelfs definetely make a difference with the Capitole. Personally, I prefer the sound of the Capitole when used with my Joule preamp... it just sounds a bit more whole and tonally right to me that way.BTW, You DO NOT have to send the player to Canada for the SE mod. I have done the SE mod (and some basic severice) to several Capitole CD players (I'm a authorized Audio Aero dealer and AA distributor Globe Audio has approved me to do the mods). Check with Jody and Mat @ Globe Audio, they may have someone fairly near by so you do not have to ship your player across the country or to Canada to get the SE mod done.
I have my own little twist of the SE mod, prefering Cryo'd Hovland caps instead of the units Jody likes to use. In any case, the SE mod on a MK2 Captiole is a clear step forward. A slight layer of fuzz goes away, they player becomes more resolving but maintains its very natural tonal characteristics.

What shipping hassles and risks?
"What shipping hassles and risks?"You're kidding, right? I can't send a package to the County line without UPS smashing the crap out of it.....
....and if UPS or FedEx don't smash it, the Canadian Customs will either sit on it for a month or loose it....
I'm not paranoid, but it does kinda bother me when people aren't talking about me
At the risk of hijacking this thread, I have shipped and had shipped to me hundreds of pieces across the border. I've never had a serious incident, and as for Canada Customs, two to three days max. The secret - Don't use UPS or FEDEX. Use good old USPS or Canada Post.
