I have a dvd player connected to both my home theater receiver and an external DAC. The receiver does convert DTS and Dolby but not the DAC. So when I want to listen to a movie, I use the receiver decoder and when I want to listen to music I use the DAC instead. I noticed that when I'm playing a DVD (dolby, DTS), the DAC output produce a horrible sound. Is this harmfull for the DAC?
Follow Ups:
There should be no issue with the DTS stream going to the DAC.
The DAC can't handle the DD or DTS bitstream. If you desire to listen to movies through the DAC, simply search the audio output menu of the DVD player and set it to output "PCM" data. Of course, the receiver needs the DD and DTS bitstreams to produce the best results with those codecs, and the DAC will produce only a stereo signal with a PCM source, so you probably don't want to make the change. No damage will result from feeding the DAC an incompatible data stream, as all that results is the audible noise you have descibed. Good luck.
Thanks,No, I don't want to listen to dvds through the DAC, only music. So if there is no issue having DTS or Dolby going in the DAC, I will stop unplugging it everytime I watch a movie.
