I'm using the Audio Research CD2 MKI and when it is under standby mode (ie. off with the mains still plugged in) the casing remains rather hot. Not too hot to touch but would be uncomfortable to hold a hand on for a long time.My question is whether this will be harmful to the electronics inside if kept under this heat for years on end. Obviously ARC intended certain parts of the player to be on all the time but if I added some ventilation, say with a tiny computer CPU fan attached to the table blowing air up into the slits on the bottom of the CD3 casing, help to lengthen the life of the machine?
Or is the heat not a significant issue? My CD3 sits in a non-air conditioned room of around 28 Celcius.
Follow Ups:
Just check out my manual and it says that the analogue stages are still on when the CD3 is under standby mode. Makes for a better sound. The CD3 uses 26 Watts of power during standby so I now know roughly the amount of waste heat generated. It's about right.
I think a small fan beneath the player (attached to the table not the player) blowing only while the player is on standby is a good solution. When using the player, the fan is off.
My machine has been on for the last 27 days, 24 hours a day and is not hot or even warm for that matter. As others say, you should talk to ARC. A fan, besides from causing inferior sound through increased vibration, is fighting the problem sympton, not correcting it.
Thanks for the concern 'Cool' (hee hee), but you have a MK2 which might be different from the MK1 I'm using. Also the dealer of AR in Thai land where I'm at wasn't sure exactly how hot was hot so they tested one of their CD3-MK1s at the shop and it was very slightly warm under standby 30 minutes in an AIRCON room.
I repeated the test at home and my unit was as cool as the shop's under air con but was considerable hotter in non-aircon conditions. I think the ambient temp is an important factor.
I've added a tiny computer CPU fan to my system now. One that I switch on when I am not using the CD3 but remove when I'm listening to music. I'm convinced that this will make the electronics inside last longer.
I might whip out the vacuum cleaner and screwdriver over a weekend and do some housekeeping too. The carpet of dust inside isn't helping at all.
I have an ARC CD3 MK 2 and it does not get as hot as yours is described. Perhaps you want to send it to an authorized repair to have checked or email ARC for comment. No to the fan. This machine is made not to vibrate. Your fan will cause vibration which will interfere with the quality of an outstanding CD player.
ARC is a fantastic company, but they aren't real big into email. They like the telephone. Good news is that rates are coming down all over the world. You could fax them a letter which would be shorter/less expensive than a voice call.
There isn't any consumer email address given at the ARC website. Do you have an email address I can write to?
