I asked this before but didn't get much of a response, hopefully it is not a stupid question. I have narrowed it down to a Marantz 5400 or a Cambridge since I can get a 30 day return period with Audioadvisor (I live in a small town with no real audio stores). But here is my question since I already own a Pioneer 525 which I can use as a transport. I can get a Scott Nixon or a Audio Note DAC in the same price range. In the $500 range do you think a person is better off getting a stand-alone CD player or a DAC? I can see arguments for both but it would seem to me that the DAC would be the better route so I can upgrade the transport later. But that aside, which will provide the best sound? Just curious what would be the biggest bang for my buck in this range.
Follow Ups:
I received the X-dac v3
first listen was diappointing no better that the my Rotel by itself. I let the unit burn in and it was a little better after 3 days. After a lot of reading most feel the unit needs the better PSU which is just a larger trany which I will try this week. Also I ordered some belden cable to build a JR digital cable. I have 30 days before I have to return it
Well, since I can get one of these used and finally got one for a price I am willing to pay, I decided to just go ahead and dive in. I can always sell it for close to what I paid for it. Either it will be wonderful or it won't.
There's a Bolder Mensa modded ART DI/O DAC + power supply for sale in this link. You may want to consider it.http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=18455

That they will all sound different to you. I would
advise against buying any player until you can hear it
in your system. The same thing can be said about the
sound of DACs. I use a MF A3.24 fed from a Denon
DV-2200 player for redbook. By auditioning many
players I have come to the conclusion that I will
have to spend over $1K to better what I have.
Each brand of CD player has their own unique type
of sound and the higher you go in price the harder
it is to discern the differences. But if you don't
mind the return process, go for it and try either
the Cambridge or the Marantz. I was also really interested
in the Cambridge 640 but could not hear it without buying it.
I was curious how the Wolfson dacs would sound in it.
I listened to a Arcam 73 that had the Wolfson dacs.
The high end was more detailed and somewhat brighter
than my MF DAC. But as many have said before I
found the bass response lacking so I did not get it.Good Luck,
Bill
I will be getting an MF X3 DAC today I bought a demo for $499. I will be trying it out using an older rotel CDP as a transport. I will let you if it does any magic or not
