Any suggestion for a good DVD Player with decent video using component outputs and run in a purely 2 channel rig using the player's internal DACs? I don't really need DVD-A or SACD, but I'm willing to consider a multi format machine. But simple good 2 channel stereo sound on DVD-V and good picture quality in a non-High Definition TV environment (currently) is what I'm after. I'm finding myself watching more music/concert video DVDs these days. TV goes through main 2 ch. rig.Somewhere in the $1000.00 price range or less is what I can budget right now. Ideas?
Follow Ups:
I have a couple of systems which include music and television and therefore also need DVD TV and music players. While I have the Tosh 3950 (modded by Reference Audio Mods)and have tried a Denon player (2200), and also use separate DACs w/ directv HD receivers (music channels are a bonus), I would love to try one of the Arcam DVD players but they are just so pricey, even used, that I keep that particular improvement in the back of my mind. Very nice gear with Redbook playback that is not too shabby.

For 1000$ buy a 400$ dvd player from pioneer elite, sony ES etc...which will sound very good with your concert cds.Spend the rest (600$) on a NAD/Cambridge audio/Marantz dedicated CD Player.I would suggest the marantz cd6000 ose or the CA Azur640c or the NAD 541I cd players. I have gone down this ally before. This is the best in my experience.
Try LG DV7832NXC DVD Player, only about $200 canadian, great sounding, I sold my Ack dAck v.1.3 after I bought this player.
Didn't post in the Title cuz it's not popular any more ;-)
But try a Toshibs DVD player the old trusty 3950 is really a V good video machine and Modded with the swenson mods is V impresive sounding... Much better than the bulk of dedicated Players currently available at at least 10x the price.
Mine easily rivals my Vinyl setup.. and it's a pretty decent one by most any yardstick.. Do note that the 'differences' in CD replay are surprisngly small.. diminishing returns are 'redefined' in this arena :-)....differences that make a carefull setting of VTA on a Cartridge seem absolutely huge by comparison.
Best possible advice is to NOT read the magazines :-)
The 3960 is not the same.So not only would be careful about magazines, you would be careful about possible stealth marketing campaigns online when a couple people show up trumpeting some component as performing 10x its price. Particularly when the company then discontinues it, and substitutes and objectively inferior model in its place.
Or haven't you been reading about the 3960?

Yes you can.. and the 3960 is definitely 'different'..Cheaper Plastic Case and lotsa Silly gymnastics to counteract the silly Case..BUT the Audio board still uses the same Burr Brown Dac and the Output is actualy more user friendly than the 3950's.
There's a little more to everything than just what's posted here :-)
don't forget the remote - totally cruddy on the 3960 and won't access some of the display features actually available on the 3960, such as track remaining time, track number, etc.
And tell me how you would know better than the folks at Benchmark that the 3960 is not bit perfect, a bare minimum requirement.I own a 3960. And it's junk. Do you own one? Who measured it for you?

I think it makes the most sense to buy a cheaper DVD player and use it with an external DAC. I agree that the Denon 2900/2910/3910/5900/5910 and Pioneer Elite players are awesome, but their video circuitry is way overkill for your TV. You're paying for something you don't need and the DAC/analog stages are only marginal compared to CD Players or a DAC. I guess another option is to get the clocks and analog stages upgraded but then you're looking at some serious green.
I have the Denon 5900 and it's outstanding. Also owned the 2900 and it was very good.
I can vouch for the 3910 as having excellent audio, although I have yet to do comparson testing with my Spectral system and using the co-ax out to the Spectral DAC.
Poineer Elite
the DV45A and the DV47AI have a very clinical and typically digital sound. The DV59AI is worth a listen though.
How did you audition these, in your system? My Pioneer DV 47 Ai is quite clinical esp. vs. analog, but it's good enough to detect differences in variuous CD's and DVD sources easily and overall, the 2 channel sound is not perfect but OK.I am interested in upgrading. What would be an entry level CDP that you suggest under $400? I have been researching DAC's, the low cost modded units, and fixing the player (Reference Audio Mods is the only one who will do it other than Empirical for a lot more).
I found the 45A and 47Ai to be unremarkable value as CD spinners.
Denon's DVD2910 is decent, as is the DVD2900 if you can find one. I still like the modded 3950/60 DVDs from Toshiba.
I have the Elite 45A and have been using it for CDs as well as DVDs. I am ready to upgade. I plan to keep the 45A for Dvd, and get a new CDP. Are you saying the 45A does not make a good transport? I am considering a DAC such as Mf, Bel Canto, or Benchmark to use with the 45A. Alternatively, I would consider buying a single box CDP like a Jolida. What do you think?
Yes...I agree....didnt have the number when I posted...
