Life is too short to fully review any product that comes my way. I'll only spend time on something that is either cost effective, improves my system in a significant way, or is the new state of the art.
That means having a system that is in itself state of the art, otherwise the product can't be reviewed to its fullest measure.
Do you really want a reviewer giving you info on a piece of equipment using a set of bookshelf speakers and a receiver with zip cord for connectors? Like you, most reviewers don't have the money to buy the best equipment at full price.
While I don't believe that we should receive something for nothing, it is conducive to appropriate reviewing that we can get the best for less to maximize our ability to give the most accurate reviews.
At least in my case, I never ask the company whether I can purchase the unit until its ready to be sent back to the factory and the review is complete. Also, luckily, I can afford to buy what I want and don't need the discount thus there's no reason to scue the review.
Follow Ups:
Every reviewer who posts here has a slam-dunk justifications for their practices. And every critical reader is taken to task as a fool.
r
seems unimportant in most reviews.
Again, would you prefer that a reviewer use mid or lo-fi equipment to review something super high end that they may not be able to afford because they are low paid reviewers. I certainly couldn't even eat out once a month on what I get for my column, never mind afford great equipment, or more than one piece of a certain type to use for comparison purposes.
anything 'super high end' will end up with a rave pretty much regardless of who reviews it so I'd rather see affordable equipment reviewed by reviewers unbeholden to any mfgs for loaned equipement.
