Come clean with us. Start with that ugly turntable with the freakish arm!
Follow Ups:
Arthur Salvatore called it out quite a few years ago on www.high-endaudio.com
Better yet why not just publish every reviewer's tax returns as a special edition. That final tweak has something to do with MF's charitable contributions. I just know it.And I think we have the right to know where every audio reviewer was on November 22, 1963. Oh and any information you guys have on Area 51 would be cool too. And the Mary M/baby thing. And Anna Nicole if you've got photos. I'm pretty sure Jimi and Jim were murdered but if you have proof send it over. And I know Rimbaud ran guns and all but is Stallone really related? And if any of you guys have an in with the Freemasons I know how to be discrete. MM'ums the word.

Otherwise you need to subscribe to the NSA's monthly tape service. ;~)

We'll get to the bottom of this friendship business yet.
...of the Communist Party?"
Was that just another insider bash for the manufacturer/dealer/reviewer clique, closed to all the non-trade scum?
Friendships! EEEgads! How low will they go? Does their treachery know no bounds?
Oops, -t, NT and MT and all that.

I assume you are referring to the Continuum, which he bought. He also
owns Wilson MAXX 2 speakers, a pair of Musical Fidelity kW power
amplifiers and a kWp preamplifier, a Manley Steelhead phono preamp,
an Alesis Masterlink CD player/hard-disk recorder, and a Music
Reference RM200 tube power amplifier, all of which he has mentioned
in print as being purchased. If you are not a Stereophile reader,
then you would not have known that, of course.
He also owns a bunch of other stuff, which I cannot bring to mind
right now.

Yes I do. Even so, I wish I could pay him more - Hope Mikey doesn't
read this :-)

and is quite prolific.
No one is perfect though. His review of the Sutherland Ph3D (which I own) was not up to his usual high standards. It seemed like he gave the unit only a cursory glance. I doubt anyone would come away with any real knowledge/understanding of the 3D after reading it.
I'm very much a vinyl guy and Mikey is The King of Vinyl as far as I'm concerned.
I have no problem with reviewers, or anyone, for that matter, receiving an accomodation in the pricing of equipment they purchase. With respect to the Continuum purchase, I know there was a lot of talk here about Mr. Fremer's purchase of that table and his rave review. I can understand why Mr. Fremer (or the manufacturer) does not want the specific price disclosed. All I want to know is whether that price was disclosed to you or anyone else at the publication and whether any kind of policy or vetting applies to such purchases. There is a BIG difference between paying a distributor's price, or say 40% or retail, and paying a nominal price that allows someone to claim the item was "purchased."

Yes, Michael Fremer told me how much he was paying for the Continuum
player. It was a large 5-figure sum of money. And it is not anyone
else's business (other than the IRS) to know exactly how much.

actually, it's non of the IRS's business either!
some sort of tax advantageous implication for a reviewer purchase; e.g. business expense, or capital expenditure, or deductibility of interest paid on loans to procure... that sort of thing (which would be sweet!)

because eventually someone would notice. Mikey has paid his dues and I would never seriously question his integrity and honesty.
I still think that tt is ugly! Maybe I'm jealous.
I admit to stealing capacitors from an employer in the early 80,s. So who am I to cast a stone?
lousy joke given the type of nonsense is often written here.
...and he got a lot of flak for getting the reviewer accommodation price for it, and a lot of flak for just being able to afford the reviewer price. And he'd probably get a lot of flak if he just had it on long-term loan. Face it, this is a no-win situation for expensive gear. You become an instant target for "player-haters" club members.
I meant it for laughs. Geez!
at such a stratospheric price (even at accommodation), do you think he would buy a pricey model just because he can? Throw away his own money?
I never said anything about the quality of his turntable purchase (it must be an exceptional unit). I just point out that stones get thrown regardless, just because it is expensive. I bought a Walker turntable and I speak from personal experience (and I don't feel that I threw away my money).
a walker! i havent even refurbed my mapleknoll athena (the most vivid sounding tt ever in my system). i am limping along with my sapphire.

when a reviewer buys a piece of gear, why not just say what the deal is. otherwise, it just looks like a motherlode of expensive gear is changing hands quietly in a relatively short period of time. Anyone who buys hi end knows the money one can piss away, even when you earn a bundle. adding up 2 years of receipts, even at accomodation, is a lot of cash or credit or both....in any case, it seems to add up to a number that suggests unlimited whoopee funds or a serious compulsive disorder. i know hobbies attract the lunatic fringe, but most readers temper their spending to suit their families best interests. no one should buy without inhibition...especially people in the industry. part of credibility is relating to reader.
