Did they listen to the component?, now, after just glancing at issue No. 16, there's, Did they even *have* the component?; Coda 01 Preamplifier.Too funny!
Follow Ups:
"Uh... well, we "compared" 10 different preamplifiers ranging in cost from $100 to $5000 and they all sounded identical... not that we even listened to them... we don't NEED to, we KNOW they all sound alike. We just... uh...are showing you the manufacturer specs and we feel we add value to those... somehow."The nice part is they could use the same review for power amps, CDP's, cables and just about everything else except speakers. No wonder they're giving the mag away as a free download.
"We mesaured 10 different preamplifiers ranging in cost from $100 to $5000 and as all are clearly well designed there's absolutely no need to bother listening. If your taste runs to Rolex watchs then the $5,000 jobbie is for you, but do realize equivalent performance and reliability can be had for one tenth (or less)."
And for music reviews:"We measured 10 CD's of different music and we highly recommend the two with the widest dynamic range as being most enjoyable and giving you the most bang for your buck".

"If your taste runs to Rolex watchs then the $5,000 jobbie is for you, but do realize equivalent performance and reliability can be had for one tenth (or less)."Actually the 30 dollar digital watch is much more acurate than a 5 K Rolex. Perhaps they are onto something, however extreme their view may be?
I thought the reviews were more factual than most we have to put up with these days in the glossy mags and e-mags, where breathless copy is the order of the day. They didn't seem to comment much on the 'sound' of the products, as you said. But I also challenge anyone to be able to detect big differences in the sound of any one component in a system, in blind tests. Sighted subjective reviewers merely review a single component in their own systems, which can make the sound 'changes' and 'improvements' they often describe irrelevant to someone else with another system. The worst offenders are the ones (and almost every reviewer does this) who attribute qualities of the overall sound they are hearing to the one component in question. These unwarranted conclusions are then used to 'sell' the component.
It was also disappointing that they did not review tube preamps.
In all, I found the technical detail of the reviews refreshing, but despite the welcome departure from subjective reviewing, overly opinionated. It's obvious that they would have been able to sell little if any advertising, with that format. All the better IMO.

If you can't, don't worry, some reviewer will hear it for you ;)

dude, have you taken your meds? :)
i write three paragraphs and all you can do is knee jerk.
you'd think the 'audio critic' was the antichrist. relax.
> dude, have you taken your meds? :) <As laughter is the best medicine, I'm prescribing for bjh two Audio Critics and to call me in the morning. :)
Better have good professional misconduct insurance!
I just read 2 of those magnificent Audio Critics and people at work say I am happier and a joy to be around. I'm more prone to easy laughter (no doubt from TAC's preamplifier reviews or their marvelous "they all sound the same because I say so" mentality) and I'm even going to put my own audio mag together based on what I've read in TAC. I'm going to call it "The Anti-Listener". Wanna be my first subscriber? And probably my last? :)
submission for "The Anti-Listener"!BTW, how'd he get out of Prop Head?... just because you keepers are volunteers doesn't mean that lax performance will be tolerated!
The Anti-Listener sounds too much like Listener, Art Dudley's former mag. And my second choice "We Laugh At Those That Can Hear" is too long but it could be a nice bi-line. Any suggestions? So far I have:Deafmute Quarterly (or Monthly if I can find enough fools to read it)
