JA's editorial wasn't really about the specifics of what gets chosen for review. Please note Art Dudley's seemingly strange editorial in the same issue. If you look closely at Art's editorial, you will see what this is really all about.
A prominent reviewer from another prominent US audio magazine took tens of thousands of dollars worth of cables that had been loaned to him and sold them on Audiogon. When he got caught, the magazine tried to sweep the sordid facts under the rug and pretend like nothing happened. "Nothing to see here, move along, move along!"
JA and AD were simply reiterating the policies of Stereophile so that you wouldn't confuse the unethical practices of some magazines in the industry with Stereophile's clearly stated and well-enforced policies.
Follow Ups:
SPEAKING ONLY FOR MYSELF:Verily, a "Roman a clef" if you know the sordid stories alluded to.
XXX XXXX, a grand old man of consumer electronics, once in person told me a hair-raising tale of having been made aware that he would be allowed to treat a certain alleged journalist to dinner. OK. And the "guest" chose the restaurant, even though it was obvious that the "guest" had no intention of paying or contributing. And the "guest" brought one of his pals along to share the booty. So to speak. Talk like a pirate day is coming up, isn't it?
XXX was running late so he phoned the restaurant (pre cell phone days) and told them to seat his guests and get them started. By the time XXX arrived, not all that late at all, between Champagne, and caviare at $90 a spoonful, these characters right out of the Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter, even before the main courses were ordered, had exceeded the limit on the company-issued charge card, and XXX had to put it on his personal card and seek reimbursement. Which caused much eye-popping.
My attitude is that if a manufacturer wants to invite 24 audio journalists to lunch at a swank restaurant atop a skyscraper, that's their choice and I am grateful if invited. But it really crosses the line for an alleged journalist to inform a manufacturer that he will pick up the tab for an extravagant feed, and then bring a friend. But some legendary folks seem to be above criticism. But their attitude lives on, about which:
I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop about the review cables (print media, you can't blame an ezine for this one) that sold on an auction site. I gather I will have to wait a while... .
Cheerio,
Damnit, I hate it when everyone gets to talk about what is in the latest Stereophile, exhausting themselves on the topics.....before I get mine. If I weren't so old fashioned and choose to read in my reading room, I'd do something about this situation. ;~)

You're lucky--think about it: I got my March issue at the start of this week. I felt good. Until it occurred to me that, hey, this was the March issue and it was STILL FEBRUARY. I mean, if a magazine can't get something that simple right, what chance have they got tackling bigger issues--such as audio???? Maybe you have been upset about not getting the mag when others do, but you might just get it in the right month and avoid all of the anxiety I have been going through....In other words, be careful of what you wish for, it might just go on sale after you get it.
