To me it seems more indicative of JA's loyalty to the old guard, ironic really since were there to be a shakup I personally wouldn't mind seeing him (JA) go.I sense that JA is bored with the task and would likely be pleased to find someone capable of assuming the reins; and he can only blame himself for making that no faint task. Besides, were he to concentrate more exclusively on recording that would also be a good thing IMHO.
No Guru, No Method, No Teacher
Follow Ups:
I don't know of anyone out there who can do all that he does with reviews, measurements as part of reviews, shows, recordings and much more. Does anyone realize how much time it all takes? Surely he is not keeping bankers' hours. He could have walked away from it all a few years back, but no. He stayed on to try to make Stereophile much better (within constraints) and answer wackos like us on AA.
When Audio magazine made Cory Greenberg the editor, I said it's all over. I few months later, I was right. Good for Cory. He was an amusing commentator and now he has parlayed a barrel full of crap into big dollars.

Nope. That must be good stuff you're smoking, bjh.
John Atkinson
Editor, Stereophile
John do you suppose there exists anyone so green as to believe you'd have responsed differently even were it the actualy case that you're suppressing an nearly irrepressible urge to smash to little bits your test equipment and hang up your reviewing pen?Hence I'm going with wait and see ... and yes, I know, your next post will be to say I'll be waiting a long time!
LOL
> your next post will be to say I'll be waiting a long time!
Exactly so. At least your crystal ball is working 50% of the time.
John Atkinson
Editor, Stereophile
I was waiting for that!
Still laughing.
I think that JA thinks that he has an obligation to the industry. And, - FWIW, - I think that Sphile is an important voice, and one of the very few left. It is high value, even though there are things that I would not do, and not want to see happen if I was the holder of the reins. With high end audio, it is such a varied and unique art form that very few, if any, other hobbyist publications can/could stay afloat with so much disparity of opinion and tastes. Even in an art publication like "Photography Today," - there's so much more "good" or "bad" that can be attached to a camera than an amplifier. This is why Stereophile will never really cater to it's readers, - and why those readers will always be biting its ass. All the vitriol, accusations of "payola," and "why don't you write about what I think is good;" - are completely inescapable and will be a part of Stereophile for as long as it exists. In short, - no matter what is written, Stereophile can NEVER win. Even if Stereophile did something like create a rule that it would only ever discuss $2,000 + Tube amps and horn speakers and only CDPs as sources, - it still would be overwhelmed with too much content to ever fully cover 1/100 of the industry and still be subjected to "why don't you talk about my amp?"
Of course, all of this has been said before. And, it all will be said again. We all keep fighting the same fights, over and over. Next week, they'll be another post here from some newbie wanker who accuses John of taking advertizing "payola" from MF....
Watching the reel as it comes to a close,
Brutally taking it's time,
People who change for no reason at all,
It's happening all of the time.
but it is frustrating, with all of the components out there, that so much attention is lavished on one manufacturer.I refuse to believe that there are not other, "undercovered" manufacturers who make good-sounding stuff and who would be happy to supply a unit for review -- even though I recognize that there is bad-sounding stuff out there (I agree: who wants to spend the time explaining in 1500 words why a bad-sounding product is bad?) and I recognize that some manufacturers, for all kinds of reasons good and bad, don't want to participate in the review process.
And I say that without with intending or implying or anything else that there is some illicit, improper, or under the table goings-on between Stereophile, "Sam Tellig" or JA and MF that results in this particular focus.
It is, in the end, an editorial decision, but one that this reader would like to see changed.
I agree. I enjoy ST perspective on things but I have zero interest in MF gear. There is so much interesting gear in existence why spend 50% of your time on MF gear? I really like my favorite Tai dish "Pad see ew with chicken" but I don't eat it 4 days a week.
