sometimes the video mags put individual prices of each component of a set of surround speakers with no collective price that might include the 5.1 setup. it would make it easier to calculate additions or substitutions.i said it was a MINOR quibble and it is, there are just a lot of things to be said there.

And another minor quibble. When they say three feet out from the rear wall, do they mean from the FRONT or the REAR of the speaker? I asked this question at an Ask the Editors session several years ago, but got no clear answer.

Thanks to Bruce Kendall for the info. I figured the rear as well. What worried me was that when they recommend distance apart for speakers, they sometimes specify from the center of the tweeter.
that's the only consistent reference and woofer to boundary distance is the critical one. If the manufacturer says 3 ft, he is probably suggesting a minimum since the most effective distance cannot be specified without knowing more about the room and the setup. Calculators, such as CARA and RoomOptimizer, usually refer to the center of the driver front panel, although it is the woofer position that is most relevant. The same should be the case with other schemes for speaker placement as the depth of the cabinet is much less relevant than the position of the LF source.Even if you have 3 or more.
