In Reply to: Any examples of a critic criticizing another critic for publishing questionable theories or advice? posted by Richard BassNut Greene on February 8, 2007 at 07:14:57:
As bjh has already mentioned, Pierre Sprey is a "manufacturer" and not a critic. His comments amount to a marketing blurb rather than a review. As for a critique of the quotes from Pierre that you posted, I'm not a critic either but I'd say the first two are so far over the top that they're in deep space. The first *could* be true if the $2000 speaker was covered in the same horse blanket as in #3 and was placed in a closet. The third is classic manufacturer marketing hype with respect to the amount of improvement. Lifting cables may result in a difference in sound but it would not be comparable to horse blankets removed from speakers. The final quote I've found to be untrue. So:
>the most bizarre audio advice I've read since I became interested in audio in the mid-1960's can be found in the Mapleshade CD's/wires/tweaks catalog.<
I would agree. I hasten to add that my agreement doesn't make it true.
Follow Ups:
I used the bizarre "advice" from non-critic Sprey because I didn't want to single out any real critic for my example, but I did want to show one example of bizzare audio claims.

Where would I find an audiophile horse that might need such a blanket?> I did want to show one example of bizzare audio claims. <
You picked the best example I've ever encountered. I once had a "discussion" with someone on this very forum that believed in Pierre's claims, particularly about the $100 speaker with good wire vs...". Sure it could be true in an odd circumstance but back at the time it was first written, the search for the best $2K speaker was a quest of mine and not one of them that I listened to could have been bettered by a $100 speaker with good wire. I would challenge anyone to show me where it would happen more than once out of 1000 speakers.
And you tried and tried?
Having heard my share of $100 speakers, I didn't try for long!

Really didn't intend to use it but it was simpler than inserting and re-inserting different cables.
