So I'm reading Sam the T in the January Stereophile, and he's gushing over the looks of the Unison Preludio -- "one of the most beautiful amplifiers in the world," etc. -- and I think, "Oh, I want to see that," and flip ahead, and then back, looking for a picture. But though there are pictures of Sam and his wife and their hosts and friends, there is no picture of this supposedly gorgeous amplifier. Nor is there a picture of the Opera Quinta speakers that he is also reviewing. What's up with that? And what's up with those ugly diagonal shots? They're okay on the cover, but not in a review -- they're useless in showing what something actually looks like. I wanted to show my wife the VA Beethovens when MF reviewed them, but the accompanying picture was totally WAF-negative. Just show us what the gear looks like, the way you do with most of your reviews!
And then, the reverse: in the Feb. issue there is a prominent photo of Captain Beefheart on the contents page. I'm a big fan, and so I turned straight to that page first thing. But to my disappointment, the "review" was minuscule -- no bigger than the photo -- and said absolutely nothing about CB or about the two videos (about CB and Syd Barrett) it was supposedly reviewing. I understand that the reviewer didn't like the videos much, but then why highlight such an inconsequential review on the contents spread? Or run it at all?
Don't get me wrong. I subscribe to Stereophile and read it with pleasure. I just think some of the design decisions could be improved upon.
Follow Ups:
I love the photos in HiFi+. And the high grade paper they use is perfect for them. I know HiFi+ is hugely expensive but it the best audio magazine I have ever seen with respect to tons of awesome photos. Stereophile takes the cake with content though imo.
Just goofing off. No flame intended, just playing on the concept of wanting complete interior shots.I hear ya, though. I want all my turntable shots to be done showing the needle in the groove.

Hell I'd rather look inside audio components. Although I still have that Playboy with Cindy Crawford inside.
Once my ex was in my sound room and I pointed to the big black round things (toroidals) inside my amp. "Do you know what those are"?, I asked. "No", she said. "They are nuclear reactors", I replied. "Oh" she said. Then she added, "I've never seen one of those before".
She believed me. I could not believe it. Not blonde either.
my beef is that when it would be interesting to know just what a product looks like for details of construction or usage, there are no photos. this includes tas of course (sorely lacking in illustration).the hifi+ style diagonal shots in the midst of the text are a distraction to reading continuity. photos could be better organized and placed so as not to interfere with the reading of the text.
products like roller blocks would benefit from shots illustrating their actual usage. i can only imagine how to arrange them.

Want to see the interior and exploded construction layer-by-laser shots of the JM Labs Grand Utopia BE? Get a copy of Stereo Sound #149. Not cheap per issue (around $35 in Little Tokyo), but the best porno never is.
hi steve,i know you used to live here (remember paul carvel's bare feet?), what kind of store has those mags in LT? buying ONE issue wont kill me.

It is awesome to see your name pop up here!!I was frightened, shocked, and really bummed to hear about your cycling accident. As a fellow cyclist, it is very, very, difficult, and scary to hear such things. I have been thinking about you quite a lot, and I am hoping that your recovery not only encompasses your participation here; but also the other physical, mental, and spiritual activities as well.
If it is your desire to get back up on the bike ASAP, - I wish you quick speed in that endeavor too!!!
Cheers,
If it's not love, then it's the bomb that'll bring us together
Thanks for the kind words and positive thoughts. I'm back on wheels again, but now it's a wheelchair. More details are on my blog (linked below). The injuries are described in the third post down, "The last cast is off".
I've known of your accident since the news was first posted at the Asylum, but today was the first time I looked at your blog and read the detailed list of injuries. Then when I read:there was some speculation that I would regain sensation and mobility in my legs. After ten weeks this has not happened, so for the forseeable future I will be in a wheelchair.
I felt moved to post a reply to you. Despite this terrible situation, you are here carrying on, seemingly as before; and I am very impressed. I hope you can maintain your positive outlook even when you have a bad day.
Davis Phinney may be your inspiration - but you are ours.
Regards,
Geoff

anyone who listened to Beefheart is OK by me. Legend has it he broke a microphone with just his voice. (unlike Madonna....who in a a fit of pop-eroticism almost swallowed a mic onstage)

Yet Trout Mask Replica is never referred to by magazine writers
in their hardware reviews. Go figure!

Safe as Milk as one of my R2D4s .Before my time--for me a recent discovery.
I dunno. I seem to recall Harley mentioning it over and over during his tenure with you guys which is why I ultimately popped for it. I've sprung many times for music that's been touted in the august pages of the various audio journals and, more often than not, regretted it. TMR is the ONLY album I let myself be cajoled into that I'm truly embarrassed to own.
I'll even pay shipping
then I recommend you stay away from Wild Man Fischer albums, too ;> )
Thanks for the headsup. Just last night I almost pulled the trigger on WMF's whole discography on Amazon. LOL!
if Stereophile can do R2D4, then maybe the Asylum can do R2 Avoid at all Costs...
Unfortunately in the publishing world, editorial content and graphics quality do not always go hand-in-hand. Stereophile has never put a premium on photos and graphics, say, the way HiFi+ magazine does. Maybe they figure most of us can go on the manufacturer's website to look up pretty pictures, but even then, you don't often get a good visual of the component you're looking for. So I applaud Hi-Fi+ for their excellent photography, it gives me a much better feel for the product under review.
with no samples included.
by the time it goes through the editors and the production team, there's never any left.

We better keep that information out of the hands of the conspiracy theorists.
I'll be looking for the vintage in the April issue.
Many good points however, in fact where it comes to photos it seems to me that SF could learn a thing or two from 6moons, if not in the quantity of photos then at least in quality.
