In Reply to: Now that you've conceded that you're wrong, why are you still going on with this silliness? posted by Rob Doorack on January 24, 2007 at 06:54:16:
Now that you've agreed that the regular one - year subscription rate for Stereophile really is $19.94, then it's patently obvious that the magazine's description of their offer of 2 years for the "regular one-year rate of $19.94" is completely legitimate. They're not doing anything "sleazy" or deceptive at all.It goes back to what I have asked but have yet to have answered. Who is actually paying that rate? Has anyone ever actually paid that rate? If no one is actually paying that rate, or if no one has ever actually paid that rate, then how can the use of the term "regular" have any real meaning?
It can't that I can see. And it then just becomes a contrivance, which I think is sleazy.
Maybe you ought to apologize for saying that?I would apologize if I saw any evidence that there are people who are actually paying that "regular" price of $19.94, and giving the term "regular" some actual meaning.
Uh Steve, they're offering that price every month. It's printed right there in the magazine.Yes, for the purpose of fulfilling regulatory obligations. Are you seriously arguing that this is a solicitation to subscribers? Is that why it's published in fine print, at the back of the magazine, at the bottom of the page?

This is getting ridiculous, and not a little pathetic. Since you're not personally familiar with anyone who paid $19.94 for Stereophile you've leaped to the completely unfounded conclusion that no one anywhere can possibly be paying that price, and then worked up a lot of absurd outrage over what you're hyperbolically calling unethical business practices. Even you acknowledge that your entire argument collapses if even one person is paying $19.94. Maybe you should send JA a note and ask him to open Stereophile's subscription records to you. I have no doubt that somewhere in those 80,000 customers you'll find at least one $19.94 sale.

No, I don't base it on my not being personally familiar with anyone who paid $19.94. I base it on the rate that I paid when I first subscribed some four years ago or so, what I've paid to renew since then, what I've seen offered on Stereophile's website, and what I've seen on the lap cards I've pulled out of Stereophile both before and since I first subscribed.

I don't see where that follows.
My argument concerns what Primedia is passing off as their "regular" rate. If one person out of 80,000 was paying $19.94, I don't see how that would make that rate "regular" if "regular" is to mean that which is usual or the norm. One out of 80,000 would be decidedly irregular .

Thanks. But neither of those companies are Primedia as far as I can tell.

It doesn't change the fact that Primedia is selling one year subscriptions to Stereophile for both new and renewing subscribers for $12.97 and has been doing so for years.se
And that this is the basis of those outside subsciption services charging that rate.Haven't you noticed that when you stay in a hotel room they list thee "regular" rates on the door and those are almost always much higher than what they do, have and will charge for the room.
What's wrong with saying we'll give you two years for the one year regular rate vs. we'll give you one year for a discounted rate?
