As a comparitive newbie with a still fairly entry level system, I am wondering when it is (dollar-wise) that you have a fair chance in improving your stock cables.Guys on AA have helped me out re-do my system over the last six months and I am quite pleased with the results. I have neglected any sort of power cord upgrades. I am wondering if I was on a budget of say $150/each (used ala Audiogon) do I stand a reasonable chance on upgrading the cords on my amp (Cary V12r), Pre-amp (AVA T7 EC), and CDP (Rotel 991). It seems that both the Cary and AVA come with pretty hefty cords and it seems dumb to me to spend $100-$150 bucks, and end up with the same stock cord that is on it.
Can anybody give me some names to look at? I am also wondering - on this budget, obviously, I am looking at a budget cable so, generally speaking, is it better to buy an entry-level product from a really high end company or is it better to buy a lower end company's top of the line product? Does that question make sense? In other words, do I go with a cheap Shunyata (sp?) or with a higher level PS Audio given the same amount of $.
Follow Ups:
You can get one new for $175, so a used one should be much less. I have the Taipan and the Python and they're great. The designer says the Diamondback is the cord he's most proud of, and multiple reviewers have called it the best PC under $1000.

Thanks guys for the recomendations. Now I can go do some homework on them. I think I am leaning toward the VH cables at this point. They seem to be of reasonable quality and shouldnt break the bank!
Try DH Labs :
Q-10 speaker cables
BL-1 mk II interconnects.
Their new power cord, too.
www.silversonic.comAudiotion, too. Use your ears, not just your eyes, keyboard then your wallet.
You have some very nice gear that could certainly benefit greatly from good power cords. I would try a VH Audio Type 4 cord on your amp and a Type 3 on your CDP. Both are very reasonable for the level of excellence they provide sonically. If your speakers and setup allow fairly high resolution, I think you'll be shocked with the improvement good cords can make.
I have a #4 on my amp, a #2 on my pre and a #1 on my DVD, although it's separate from the stereo.
I totally agree. I am still amazed with the difference the #4 made in my setup and I'm sure the other flavors are just as good. IMHO the performance to price ratio for this cord can't be beat.
