I've searched, but I am not getting a definite answer..Apart from the difference in gain, is there a significant sonic difference between a cable using RCA and XLR connections? I am planning to use the cables between my Aesthetic Rhea Phono and Calypso preamp. Both have the option of choosing between balanced or single ended connection. The distance between them is approx 4 meters.
Thanks beforehand for the help.

I'm using balanced differential transmission on my Quad system. I'm using a custom Quadlink (it's like XLR in a certain sense) using the ame wiring I had for RCA IC. No way, using balanced differential transmission the signal is clear and the middle range is more detailed and present. I strongly suggest balanced if you can.
I do not know your equipment. I would on most occassions use balanced over rca saying that the interconnects are the same line from the same manufacturer. It affects gain, noise and therefore you get better definition from balanced into a balanced system. In a balanced system, there is also an internal symetry. I would suggest you ask the dealer to let you listen to both in the same system and compare. Remember, that you need to wear in interconnects, that they need between 75 and 200 hours to break in. Also remember, that different brands work better with different systems. You may as well have all the problems with choosing interconnects. I use Transparent whose balanced interconnects are very good for my system.
I'm certainly no expert, but with the separate ground, the XLR should be quieter. I've found this to be true in my own system when I've had the option to go balanced. That's also what is recommended in the books and articles I've read. IMHO, if the cost is either the same or it is of minimal difference and you can use balanced, I would go that way.
