Thanks Ted, I am a new commer in the cable forum , and as I am about to change my budget cables for more expensive ones I surfed the net for some research on how much I am ready to spend on those and to get an overall Idea of what is generally believed about cables . Pesonally I am scientifically convinced about the difference !But what door do I knock on ? This forum seemed to be my natural choice .
Thank you

Hi KT,The 'best' cables should be 'no cables'...Having tried a lot of different cables along the years, none came close to that a/m goal. Each had its own unique sonic signature, tonal balance and its 'tone control' effect on the system. While this can be a good thing, it can also be detrimental giving a false impression of what the'sonic truth' is for each particular set-up in question.
Some people like to use cables to correct certain sonic deficiencies in their set-up that maybe caused by 'bad' room acoustics , poorly designed audio gear, synergy mismatches or to get a certain tonal balance that is actually not inherent in the equipment to begin with. It's an easy way out but still not that easy to achieve and most of the time the results are not satisfactory and so back to square one, trying a different set of cables.
I strongly believe that getting the equipment synergy, room acoustics and well designed audio gear should be the first and foremost goal to achieve. We all have different tastes in sound for sure (this is not my issue here), but once the above has been achieved (and its relatively easy to) the cable issue will not be so important, coz even with generic cables you'll be able to live for a good while till you find a cable that does not get in the way. These are not easy to find but they do exist, albeit being rare.
Price is also NO indication of how good a cable will perform in your set-up.

This is good stuff based on solid engineering principles and is not as expensive as some of the other boutique offerings out there.
HowdyAs a slight amplification of what Duster said: one of the reasons I was attracted to the asylum is that you can search people's posts/systems to see how their tastes, system, attitude matches yours (or at least are consistent enough for you to correlate them to yours.) If you stick around you get to know people and what their strengths (and weaknesses) are.
Personally after looking around a little (and using search) I'd try to borrow some cables from, say, friends or http://www.fatwyre.com or if you are of the DIY inclination check out the Tweakers' Asylum and perhaps build some cables for yourself.
Ted
unexpected long thread afterall !!
I'm starting to get involved in cables now .
Thanks

The first thing I suggest you do is search the web for pages that mention your specific audio components and what cables the listeners choose to connect them with. While this is not a good way to select cables for your own particular audio system, it will at least give you an idea of what other folks are doing via cabling. If you would please describe your particular audio system (makes/models), listening goals, cable budget (maximum price willing/able to spend), and any other things of importance to you, fellow inmates may be of help. Be sure to include the length needed for each cable so folks can factor that information towards your budget.
BTW, you can post the details of your audio system in Audio Asylum Inmate Systems (see link below). To list your audio system, click on "Add your system":
My system : source is Shanling SACD T 200c player, preamp Copland CTA 301 Mk II, Power amp SimAudio W5 (1999), speakers are Selah Audio RS 8 line arrays waiting for their matching subwoofers (also Selah Audio Citrine ),My pre/power comb is 8 years old and I am waiting for a Dussun integrated amp V8i that I ordered lately (very positive feedback all around forums and audio reviews)unbeatble price also!!.By the way I live in Egypt and it is not so easy to get to borrow cables for tryals .I did borrow some from a friend/dealer made in newzealand by Slinkylinks made with pure silver (interconnects and speaker cables )but frankly I could not hear the difference that supposedly would make me say Whaaaaa !!!!Maybe my pre/power is too old ?But I'm a UHF magazine reader and they loved the Atlas Questor cables and interconnects and apparently some of their lower priced ones are astonishingly good ! any comments ?I would be ready to build my own cables if Someone would tell me where to look for ?
Thanks
What is the maximum price you are willing and/or able to spend (convert funds to US dollars) for your upgrade plan? Please list the make, model, and length of each cable that's placed in your audio system at this time. It's also important to know what length (meter or foot), what connectors (spade, banana, rca, xlr, US AC plug, Schuko AC plug, etc.), and if bi-wire speaker cables are required. I assume you want to upgrade your power cords, as well.
My budjet would be around 600 US$ for 3 meters speaker cables and 2 IC,each one meter, for the moment I wont bi wire the speakers although they are designed with the necessary terminals .
My actual speaker cable is Van Den Hull 15 $ per meter oxygen free copper silver plated 70 strand , and IC's Thompson 20$ .Not impressive cabling I guess !!!
Thanks
Hi Kingtut,I suggest that you bi-wire your loudspeakers. Within your budget level, an affordable, rather high performance speaker cable option for the price is Kimber KWIK-12 terminated with AudioQuest BFA speaker cable connectors. A 50 ft. spool of speaker cable, enough to build a 3m set of external bi-wire speaker cables along with three sets of four BFA's would cost $152.5 USD and leave room in your budget for shipping charges, Furutech Schuko AC outlet upgrade(s), and two pairs of nice $150 USD 1m Cardas 300B Microtwin IC's that provide nice synergy with the Kimber KWIK-12, IME.
