A few random thoughts:A cable cannot improve anything. The best it can do is pass the signal from one component to another without adding or losing anything of significance, or, as one inmate eloquently put it, "serve the music."
It should not be difficult to do this reasonably well and in fact it is not.
Listening is a subjective and individual experience. If you think something is better, and that thought adds to your listening enjoyment, then it is better and may be worth the money to you.
One attribute of a boutique product is its appearance. Another is its price. Performance does not necessarily correlate with either, but satisfaction often does.
Follow Ups:
That a cable can only degrade the signal , it can sound better than the the cable it is replacing .
Yes, it can. Also, I avoid using the same cable twice in the same string -- e.g. in and out of CD or cassette recorder, and my preamp-amp cable is unique -- so that, whatever harm a cable does, it doesn't do it twice.
My feeling, also!
