In Reply to: Power cord for two-pole IEC device... question posted by SF tech on February 26, 2007 at 17:58:21:
The Flavor 3's braided shield is intended to be grounded to a 3-prong AC plug, so the Flavor 3 could be considered a "quasi 3-pole cable" but the device still remains ungrounded. While a 3-pole IEC connector is expected to be used for the Flavor 3's termination, it's always left ungrounded (both the shielding and the lack of a ground wire). The Flavor 3 is an excellent power cord for a 2-pole (ungrounded) digital device such as your Pioneer DV-47Ai. The DV-47Ai's 2-pole IEC inlet that you mention is able to accept a 3-pole IEC connector, so from a safety POV the maker would expect such a thing to occur. From a cable geometry POV, the Flavor 3 is ideal for the purpose since it does not include a useless ground conductor, but still involves grounded shielding (which is of great value for a digital component) that needs to be grounded to a 3-pole AC plug (the shielding is grounded at the AC plug end only, while the component remains ungrounded).
I built a DIY Flavor 3 for use on my 2-pole CDP. Since my CDP's stock power cord was a captured 2-prong type, I removed the stock power cord (18 AWG zip cord) and installed a chassis mount 3-pole IEC inlet, then simply ignored the jack's ground pin. My DIY Flavor 3 has a 3-pole IEC connector of which I also ignored the ground termination slot -- I simply tightened down the clamping screw so the unused screw and clamping plate would not rattle inside the connector.

I'm going to try a Flavor 3 cord... Do you think that upgrading to Furutech plugs would be worthwhile? The cord comes standard with cryo'd Brass WattGates, but I think I could swing the dough to get the Furutechs if it's worth it... the FI-11 (gold) plugs are available for an extra $50. The FI-25s (gold) are an additional $100. Where's the sweet spot for plugs as far as price/performance ratio is concerned? I've got to keep the total cost around or under $200. What do you think?
all my power cables now have Furutech FI-11(Cu) AC plug and FI-11(Ag) IEC connector. They work great in my system even though they are not fully broken in yet (almost two weeks now...:)
The Furutech FI-11(Cu) AC plug and FI-11(Ag) IEC connector are a great match, and are a worthy low-cost upgrade from the Wattgate Economy connectors, IME. If you ask Chris, I'm sure he will offer an insightful opinion if he thinks you should instead select the upper-line Furutech FI-25's, Oyaide, or Wattgate Audio Grade AC connectors for your particular component.I found my Flavor 3 to sound a bit bass heavy and somewhat dark when it was terminated with Wattgate Economy connectors, and enjoy it far more after I re-terminated it with a silver Wattgate 330i Ag Audio Grade AC plug and a silver Wattgate 350i Ag Audio Grade IEC connector. The Oyaide 046's would be an excellent choice, too. If your budget does not allow the more pricey connectors, I would suggest the Furutech FI-11(Cu) AC plug and FI-11(Ag) IEC connector.
If so, I would be hesitant to use them. I'm not one to regularly pull cables for contact cleaning chores... Will the contacts on these plugs oxidize if they're not cleaned regularly? If they are significantly better than the gold plated versions, I would still consider them. Are the FI-11(gold) plugs any good? Thanks for the help... I appreciate it!
Duster,
Sorry to steal the post. I have Denon AVR-3805 which also has 2 prong IEC inlet. Can i just use regular 3 prongs cable (as i have Flavor 2)without any safety issue?
Yes, you can (and a Flavor 2 is a fine choice, IMHO).
