Your option #2 ... put the power amps near the speakers. (Never compromise your long-term goal! :-)) )Yes, F-t-F connectors will degrade the sound quality slightly but probably not as much as a bad IC will ... and that's only until your budget allows you to buy 4m ICs! :-)) You can probably buy some high-quality F-t-F connectors if you search around - ie. gold-plated copper.

IMO, make sure to use a HQ coupler even if the need is only temporary. Vampire DF features a one-piece center contact, Teflon dielectric, and what looks to be a solid brass one-piece body for ground/return (prolly with decent plating and likely as good as it gets for this type of adapter...). $15.50 per pair (see link):
