I've been looking for a while to upgrade my speaker cables. I'm not even sure which ones I have (they were given to me years ago, and have no identification. Probably Monster). I need to get a bi-wire pair to go with my Vandersteens. So far, the most affordable ones I've seen on-line are; Signal(Ultra), Zu cable (Julian), DH labs(T14), and Ultimate silver series (sold on Audiogon and E-Bay). Anyone have some input on these cables? Would any of them be a significant upgrade on 12 year-old Monsters, or should I hold out until I get more dough? Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I recently purchased the Zu Wax on Zu's eBay shop for around $250. It was probably the best money I've spent on my system. They come with a 30-day full satisfaction guarantee. I can happliy say, mine are never going back! They sound great right out of the box and with time they only get better. The change they brought essentially removed my stereo and replaced it with "real music".
Just my 2 cents
Chris
I think all the ones you mentioned are good value cables. Which one will sound best in your system, though, you're going to have to try to find out. I've always found Vandersteens a bit dark and warm, so I'd be inclined to consider some silver in the cable design. The Signal Cable Resolution Reference are IMO a sceaming bargain and a great cable. I've also used Luminous Synchestra with great results.Well-built Silver cables are not harsh or bright. Silversmith and Wireworld Silver Eclipse are some of the best I've used (though out of your price range). Of the ones you mention, I have and use the Zu Julians. They're a good cable, but maybe too forgiving on top for Vandersteens, though depends on the rest of your system. Lots of folks have been impressed with the Straley/Reality cables for the bucks. Good luck.
I had Signal Cable speaker cables in my system for long time. At some point, I decided to upgrade and impulsively bought PS Audio Xstreme Plus used for $180 (we're talking regular, not biwire). These are pretty average, and I since sold them, but there wasn't any single aspect of the sound that they didn't improve SIGNIFICANTLY over Signal Cable - sondstage, bass, highs, you name it.Please take Signal Cable's advertising with not grain, but tablespoon of salt. "Best Affordable Cables" should be probably translated as "Far From the Best And Somewhat Affordable".
On my system, DH Labs speakers cables and interconnects just did not sound very good. It wasn't that they did not improve the sound, it was that they actually caused problems with the sound.Same is true with silver. It always -- always -- makes my system sound artificial and overly-bright.
I took a gamble on the Anticables and it paid in spades. I have used Analysis Plus, Kimber and some others and none of those dissapeared as the Anticables in my humble system.
You should really consider a true bi-wire configuation for
your Vandys. I moved from an internal bi-wire to a true
bi-wire with 2 sets of cables. The change brought forward
better bass and improved soundstage IMHO. YMMV......
Vandersteen himself promotes this method as being superior.
I use Cardas Crosslink which can be bought in bulk or
already terminated. Take a look at Moon Audio cables.
They sell DH Labs and Cardas cables both in bulk and
already terminated.
I decided to buy two sets of Anti-cable. The reviews are good, overall - and the price is right. I'm getting one set with all spades, and one with bananas on one end, so I can bi-wire. Thanks for all of your input!
Thanks. The current cables I have (probably Monster) are bi-wired in the way you describe (two seperate cables joined together at the amp end). Moon can do a 6ft. pair (DH labs T14)for $160. Would you recommend these?
I can recommmend buying products from Moon Audio. Drew is great!
However, I have never heard the DH Labs cable. I would read his
description of the sound of the cable on his website and see
if that is what you are looking for. His description of the
Cardas Crosslink cables I bought from him was dead on.
I would also ask here in the Cable Forum what people think of
the DH Labs cable.good luck,
