Althought I have made a couple of interconnects with Rca, this will be my first DIY balanced. I am using DH Labs Pro Studio with 2 conductors and a shield.
My question is with the shield. On RCAs many have said to leave the shield disconnected at one end. What do I do with the Balanced design,2 conductors and the shield is the ground. Not sure if I have to connect the shield (ground) at both ends or can I leave one end floating.Thanks for your help

On a true balanced system, the shield does not need to connect the two chassis together, and thus, you could ground the shield at the source end, and leave the load end floating.Unfortunately, not all syytems are actually a true balanced system, or one component, or the other, may not be. Then, p the pin 1 to pin 1 connection MUST be made, and this is typicaly handled by conecting the shield to both ends.

My method of wiring a balanced twisted pair avoids any chassis to chassis ground currents from flowing right next to the twisted pair wires, and actually shields them from it. When the pin 1 to pin 1 connection is needed, then this method of wiring can result in a cleaner overall situation, with reduced levels of RFI/EMI and a lowered noise floor.

on the outside of the cable and use this for pin 1 on each end with maybe the ceramic disc on the load end and just forget about the shield?
Would this be better than using the shield with a cap at the load end?
I do have some cryoed 1506a around still, I think I will experiment with your R-C method as well.
My preamp is a true Balanced but not sure about the Dac and Amp. I do get about a 4 db gain when I use Balanced interconnects if that is an indicater.

No, using the 16 ga. wire spiraled around just the twisted pair is not going to do a lot of good, nor is connecting a cap in series at the laod end. Do NOT do the latter, and I recommend against the first.I strongly recommend using the shield, even though it's spacing may be close to the twisted pair, on the DH Labs cable.
If you build your own using 1506A cores, then be sure to use foamed teflon spacers between the twisted pair and the shield, and the the shield will not be a sonic quality issue.

I'll build the DH Labs as is. In the New Year I'll have to order a few things so I'll get some suppies for the R-C tweek as well for the 1506a and build one with and without.Thanks again Jon
