Hi all. I'm about to make some silver IC's, and have on hand some copper Bullet plugs that I got when they first came out and were "hot". But I'm now wondering how they compare to other high-end RCA connectors -- what's their "sonic character" in comparison to others? Thanks for any info at all -- I haven't followed the Cable and IC developments for a couple of years.
Follow Ups:
female to go with them. I bought a bunch of them from some guy in Canada. If you buy enough the price gets right.
I have used the copper and silver bullets in the past, but no longer use them. I use silver wire exclusivley for my ICs yet IMHO, the bullets sound a bit flat/dead. I now use the Oyaide silvers, which I beleive allow more "presence" and a clearer soundstage to come through. The theory/concept behind the bullets do indeed make sense (and I never needed the hair dryer), but for some reason, it just didn't seem to all come together for me. I recently sold my silver bullets to another inmate, and I certainly hope his experience is different from mine. Another thought for you - if you want to take the "anti-connector" concept all the way, you should consider using the silver bullets with silver wire, or copper bullets with copper wire rather than mixing up the metals. JMO.
...though I've not used either Oyaides or Xhadows. They're both pretty pricey, even more so than the Eichmanns. What I found was the Bullet plugs removed the colouration I had become used to in other RCAs. I also buy into the whole "less is more" philosophy - it makes intuitive sense to me. The best connector is no connector. So, low mass, more along the lines of a continuation of the wire itself, seems (and sounds) a better approach.
That said, I'm going to try the Oyaides in my next ICs between the amp and pre where the signal strength is a bit higher than on source components.
When I was in the DIY mood I compared the Bullets to WBT0107, Cardas GRMO, Vampire, etc. and found them to be colored. Of course the others had their sonic signatures. The best plug I have heard to date is the Xhadow but it is pricey. In the case of plastic plugs, I prefer the WBT Nexgen over the Bullets. Never cared for using a hair dryer to get the proper fit.
................ and anyone with any experience using the Bullet plugs knows that. I have assembled hundreds of cables using Bullet plugs and installed them in systems myself, and have never had to use anything more sophisticated than my right hand. A quarter turn to the left before insertion, a quarter turn to the right as you insert, bingo. Eichmann made this suggestion in the very early days as an RCA plugs made from polymer had never been seen before, and only if some out of spec oversized non standard RCA female was involved. I believe it is still written on the instructions that come in the box. This, and the myth that they melt when you solder the wires on are both palavers.
