Hi,i know one customer in Europe using Welborne 300drd with Prometheus, i haven`t heard it myself but he is satisfied. A big group of Prometheus- customers use 300B SE power- amps to their satisfaction, it is a lucky combination because the o.b.`s are a very easy load and high efficient, the SE- amps live up, so the sound is dynamic quick and open. Sorry for this "second hand"- information but there was no Welborne 300drd- owner direct- answering your question.
Robert,
Thanks for your response. I emailed Clive Meakins who had used the DRDs in his review. He thought the combination would make me very happy especially with an active preamp. We concurred that the DRDs with a passive were lacking a level of emotional involvement which I felt was corrected by an active stage. He mentioned that perhaps it was due to the slightly lowish 1.5V sensitivity of the DRDs. Things get a little tricky when your pursuing DIY audio bliss and you start combining components. It's often difficult to audition components so one tries to find a concensus among folks with more knowledge. So far I've been fortunate. I find forums such as this invaluable. I'll have to get out to New Jersey for an audition.

Hi Tom,the combination of low- sensitive power- amps with a tvc also depends on the source. My personal suggestion is using a tubed output stage CD- player, phono- pre or reel- taperecorder, i always connected these sources to a tvc and combined them with low- sensitive amps with satisfying results. On the other side there were combinations with (even low output- impedance) transistorized sources which sometimes showed "bleached out" sound in combination with a passive pre- amp but sounded fine in combination with an active pre. To my experience this phenomen doesn`t result from mismatching impedances (of course this can happen, too - but that is another story), one powerful output, either from the source or from the pre, is ideal.

Robert,
I recently completed a preamp project which is a combination of the Bentaudio TVC and Dave Davenport's Raleigh active stage( K&K Audio). It sounds very nice and has a full function remote. Hopefully, this will resolve any sensitivity issues as well. For those interested : http://www.raleighaudio.com/george.htm
