Thank you guys for all the great responses! Okay, so I might be onto something here? Good amps, not great but good you say? Mmmm...
I am also getting the little 33 pre-amp but I heard rumours that you should chuck that little box as far as the dark side of the moon?Isnt there any mods for the little 33 as well? Something ala Naim?
Follow Ups:
I always laugh when people are ready to upgrade their gear before they get it, based on AA advice. I suggest you listen first - then decide - technically there may be better, but musically I'm so happy with my 1969 model that I never hook up my tube amps any more.Finding a well functioning 33 is a lot more of a challenge, they didn't last so well in my experience. I have one that still works well - and it's phono stage is exactly what I think Peter Walker intended, open and honest, very engaging - but this one was in rarely found good condition. However if all you need is a line stage, get a Creek OBH12 in my opinion - perhaps do that anyway and get an external phono stage, or use the 33 just as a phono stage into the Creek (that's what I do).
I have a brand new net audio 33 and 303 (click here ) and I didn't skimp - I bought them because I'm in a vacation home for a few months and didn't want to rip apart my system at home. How many audiophiles do you see that when given the opportunity to buy a complete 2nd system, they go and buy exactly what's in their first system? I guess I'm happy! But the net audio stuff is of course new, with today's electronics. I'll add a pair of Wayne Piquet's "new" Quad ESL's to them over the summer perhaps, then I'll have 2 identical systems - one built in 1969, one in 2007. Yee-haw.
Thank you LTQO,Ofcourse I'll first listen and then decide what I'll do.
I certainly think I am going to covert the 33 into a battery-powered unit with 'modern' RCA sockets and a simplified circuit - IOW remove all those filters and mode-switches.Tell me, will I be able to use a MC cartridge with the 33's phono stage? What card sides would you suggest?
Actually I know little about turntables, but my Audio Technica ML440a (the budget darling of the vinyl asylum) works very well - as does my Ortofon DJ-S but I'd never post that on the vinyl asylum (there would be a religious furor)! Of course the Ortofon DJ's have a special bond with the technics tables, if I ever upgrade it will be to the KAB technics with the hifi ortofon. The net audio Quad 33 I have uses an external wallwart for a power supply, the board it connects to is plugged into the tape adapter - no idea how it all works, I'm no tekkie.
I won't be able to test it's phono stage (which is the most important part of the net audio upgrade) for a few months because I'm on vacation, and although I'm willing to take a 303/33 and my tuner with me, I won't be lugging around a turntable any time soon!
I only just hooked the net audio stuff up yesterday, but as I say I don't have my Quads with me right now. Even through the little Rogers db101's I brought with me though, they sound pretty good - and they have a long long way to go before they break in I'm sure.
