Or another amp of similar power and price.
Follow Ups:
they are very powerful sounding amp, bass is fantastic, but they are not the most refine. Treble could use some improvement.
I use 3bsst on paradigm speakers for ht, no complaints. Built like a tank.
I recently had a Bryston 4BSST on loan and compared to the new Classe CA2200. My preamp is an Ayre K5XE and I am driving B&WN802 speakers. My experience is that the Bryston 4BSST sounds very dynamic and has excellent bass control. The Classe however had much better midrange and treble extension and the soundstage was deeper and wider. When I first hooked up the Bryston I thought maybe this could be an amp for me but after my wife and I hooked up the new Classe and listened to a variety of music including vinyl, there was no comparison the Classe won hands down.
So I think it depends on what kind of speakers you are driving and what other components you mix and match.
There is nothing sterile about 4bsst, it has a nice, smooth and full bodied sound, very little similarity to the older ST version.
Imo it is actually more musical than 14B which although more transparent and with more headroom it has a leaner bass and does not boogie like its smaller brother. YMMV as usual.
Kiepu,
When you say 4BSST is more musical than 14B, do you mean 14B SST or old 14B?
Sure, if your priority is "detail" at any cost, like for example you're willing to give up the music for that final iota of "detail" them go for it!
I thought that the previous model, the 4BST, was dynamic with great bass slam, but a bit fuzzy or hazy, Perhaps this latest model has removed that slight film or haze.
You're correct - I owned a 4BST and got rid of it many moons ago. I went to other stuff and ended up with a 6BSST (3 channel 4BSST) and then a 14BSST for the left and right and using the 6BSST on the center and rears. The guy I bought the 6BSST from has $11k tube monoblocks and it was amazing how close in sound the Bryston was given its price point.
I would like to simplify my life and have a system for video that I can also enjoy music with. I wonder how much I'd lose if I only had the front 3 channels hooked up to a 5 channel output. That 6BSST is an idea I'd not considered.
Keep in mind the 6BSST vs. 4BSST is a bit more than the proportionate increase in one channel. James Tanner of Bryston posted recently to that question at audiocircle.com. The chassis cost is more among other things. Bryston also sells mono power pac amps too.
..unless you are into sterile, bland SS sound, then I might.......
That's a really nice amp! Give the Stratos monoblocs a listen as well-regular or Extreme. It's still early days yet for mine, but they're already making me take back every less than kind thing I've said about SS amps.
Wow, they must be pretty good if you are giving up your Quicksilvers. I need something with some grunt. At least 250 wpc. I looked on the website and it seemed that Odyssey only rates up to 200.
Well, the regular monoblocs are rated @180wpc into 8 ohms. I figure they're doing well over 300 into my 4 ohm Maggies. They're loafing all the time! You want grunt, consider the Stratos Extremes which are well over 300wpc into 8, 600 into 4, and not only have considerably more grunt, but supposedly even more finesse than the regular monoblocs...this from folks who've upgraded theirs.
