I'm in the mood for moderate downsizing - giving up a BAT 50SE preamp and a Gamut D200 amp, and thinking about the PS Audio integrateds. My speakers are older Dynaudio 1.8's (new retail = $5000). My room is smallish and the speakers don't have room for maximum placement etc. That said, will I hate the choice to downsize over time?
Follow Ups:
main sytem, and to my ears it is the best amp of the many I've owned. (I am a SS amp user, though). It is very smooth, yet fast and extemely detailed from top to bottom. Not tubelike, however, just very literal in its rendition. Some might find then too unemotional, but that is a matter for personal taste and matchups. They can drive any load with ease and authority, and are very quiet. I would rate them as strong candidates, and the price is right. Very low power consumption, too. Good luck!
Having owned the earlier HCA-2 from PS Audio, I am very curious about their current line of amps. The HCA-2 was very good but not quite as transparent as some other amps I've had.
lightly modded (silver output wiring, Black Gate coupling caps) HCA-2/PCA-2 stack. Not day and night, but immediately noticeable across the spectrum. The GCC also has a leaner sound, with less prominence to the midbass and a sense of more top end energy. Other qualities are very similar. I prefer the GCC in a high-rez system, but as always, matchups are the key to satisfaction.
"The GCC also has a leaner sound, with less prominence to the midbass and a sense of more top end energy"Sounds like a recipe for listener fatigue to me. Also sounds like natural instrument tone is MIA. I had the HCA-2 and PCA-2 here for a while and the preamp is quite good but the amp is IMO a disaster and really only good as a bass amp.
Interesting. I liked the midbass energy from the HCA-2. I had the ICEpower Bel Canto M300 mono blocks. They seemed very detailed but just a tad lean too.
