Any info on these, from what I have read, they are comparable to the Hafler DL-200 but sweeter sounding. I am picking up a pair of them. Also a Crown PL1, Thorens TD-166 and a Perreaux Preamp. Any info on these or pricing would be appreciated, I do not want to pay more then they are actually worth and I have not found much value info except for the Thorens TT
Follow Ups:
I was an Amber dealer 25 years ago. The Series 70 was a better sounding amp than the Hafler DH100 or 200. Very sweet across the top end for an early 80's SS design. Made in Charlottesville, VA.
I had both the power amp and preamp at one time and regretted selling them. Nice units -well built

Used they go for around $100-$150 depending on condition. At one time I owned 8 of them. Used 4 in Mono-Mode for Bi-Amping speakers, and had 4 more for hot-spares :) I have since sold off 5 of them and have 3 left. 1 powers (mono) my center channel for HT, the other powers (mono) my rear passive sub, and I still have that 1 hot spare.I believe I also have the schematics for them somewhere. Biggest problem is one of the components - I believe it was the LM391 chip - on the circuit boards inside is no longer made and is no longer available. But I am not an electronics person, and I could be wrong.
Telefunken added clamping diodes at the output for their amp that used the LM391 /to avoid the voltage overshoots that can blow the LM391 chips, I imagine this can be done for these if needed. I plan on using a power conditioner w/ these also to help avoid grenading LOL
I was told when mine finally died that it could not be repaired. I took it to a couple of techs - but I am not an electronics person either. I figured I got my money's worth as I got a really good deal when I bought it new and had it a long time. I had a friend who owned a stereo store at the time and he had a stereo store party and the Amber rep was there. He wanted to sell one bad to show the rep and knew I'd go for it so I got it at dealer cost.
I owned one (I bought new) many moons ago (and loved it - I replaced a Phase Linear amp at the time). I used it as a main amp for a long while and also strapped in mono powering an old Dahlquist sub later on. I could probably dig around to see what they sold for but from memory I'm thinking around somwhere about $700 was the orig. list.
Hi Redline,Once I get home I can dig up some info for you. I think I've got original lit/owners manuals and some reviews.
Which version are you looking at, the black, rack-mountable with silver front handles or the black faceplate with red lettering and wood side panels?
I have a rack mountable Series 70 amp and matching Preamp Two in storage. One channel in the amp is down though. I'd like to get it fixed and use it in a secondary system. Maybe that'll be a good summer project.
I'll follow up in this thread either tonight or tomorrow morning.
They are a pair of the black one's w/ wood grain sides. Thanks for replying
Hey Redline,I came up empty in my files here at home. The info must be in a box in my storage unit. The good news is that I'm heading there on Sunday anyway, so I'll look for them then. With luck I'll find the documentation I mentioned and scan it in at work on Monday.
Thanks! Picking them up today FINALLY for mighty reasonable
Hi Redline,Well, I finally tracked down my Amber documentation and spent some time scanning it in. They have been saved as JPEGS. There's quite a bit here (original lit, spec sheets, tech sheets, Stereophile review, Absolute Sound review, Audio Critic review, New York Times write up and more) so I'll probably zip them into a folder. If you hit me with your email address I can get it over to you.
I hope you can read these alright as the resolution isn't perfect. I've also included the info I had on the Amber Preamp Two just in case you're interested.
Also, if anybody else is interested, ping me and I'll hook you up!
Thanks for the comprehensive info! Got them fired up and running mono bridged. They really do sound incredible, especially for vinyl applications w/ my Thorens TD-320 using a Ortofon OM 100. The Perreaux SA3 preamp that I am using complements the Ambers well. I actually like it better then my Krell KRC-3
